You will be a key member of the Medtronic Engineering team responsible for developing Medtronic’s Robotic Assisted Surgery platform through commercial launch and production scale-up, impacting patient outcomes.  

The Medical Surgical Group strives to enable earlier diagnosis, better treatment, faster complication-free recovery, and enhanced patient outcomes through less invasive surgical solutions. The Surgical Operating Unit sets the standard for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) by creating innovative surgical products and services.

 

A Day in the Life

The Mechanical Design Engineer II is a key contributor responsible for the released product engineering (RPE) of multiple subsystems across Medtronic’s Robotic Surgery Technology platform.

 

You will have responsibility for: 

Acting as first point of contact for Released Product Engineering in order to:

  • Provide rapid response for line-down issues.
  • Coordinate between R&D subject matter experts and other Released Product Engineering counterparts.
  • Maintain electromechanical products and capital medical equipment.
  • Participate in hardware deliverables of the Change Development Process for capital medical equipment.
  • Determine change impact on mechanical/electromechanical design and document rationales.
  • Maintain bill of materials using product lifecycle management software (Agile)the Medtronic R&D engineering team who will be responsible for designing, developing, and supporting the next generation of capital equipment for the minimally invasive surgical robotic platform.

The ideal candidate has a background in electro-mechanical systems and integration of electronic components.  It is expected that the engineer has technical knowledge and has demonstrated application of engineering principles, theories, and concepts in related field of expertise.  This person will be expected to generate solutions that are imaginative, thorough, practical, and consistent with organizational objectives.

 

Essential Functions: 

  • Knowledge and experience with 3D CAD software (Creo preferred).
  • Knowledge of analytical software such as Ansys, CE-Tol, Minitab, MathCad, MATLAB, Simulink, LabView
  • Ability to design to Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing per ASME standards Y14.5M-1994.  Advance tolerance analysis in 2D and 3D.
  • Designs electromechanical/mechatronic medical devices and subsystems.
  • Integrates electronic components with mechanical designs, including design for EMC
  • Prepares documentation in accordance with relevant internal SOPs and Design Control.
  • Interacts with suppliers, participates in DFM and DFA processes to access component and assembly manufacturability.
  • Participates in FMEAs and follows up on generated recommendations.
  • Writes engineering reports and creates presentations as required to document and communicate results.
  • Institutes design changes based on internal and external customer feedback.
  • Collaborates with peers to manage the development of appropriate testing to verify product meets internal and external customer requirements. 
  • Familiarity with manufacturing methods: Sheetmetal forming, injection molding, machining, thermoforming of plastics, etc
  • Designs to meet formal product requirements, including IEC 60601-1

 

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree required
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with 0 years of experience

 

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience in medical device industry. Full knowledge of other related disciplines including cross functional fields and market competition. 
  • Familiarity with clinical and regulatory pathways, IP and internal processes.
  • Knowledge of electromechanical/mechatronic systems
  • Clinical knowledge for uses of product.
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written. Effectively communicate and works cooperatively with others as part of a team.
  • Thorough knowledge of laboratory instrumentation and computer software skills utilizing research-based applications.
  • Statistical process control in mass production as well as Six Sigma for design validation and optimization.
  • Wide application of drafting practices, GD&T, 1D tolerance analysis and 3D analysis.
  • Kinematic and stress analysis of mechanical systems.
  • Thermal analysis and characterization

 

Working Conditions

  • Standard office setting, surgical lab, operating room, pilot lab, external research organizations, supplier visits, limited travel as required.
  • Based in North Haven, CT

The provided base salary range is used nationally (except in certain CA locations). The rate offered is compliant with federal/local regulations and may vary by experience, certification/education, market conditions, location, etc.

Min Salary: 76,000
Max Salary: 114,000
Travel: Yes, < 25 % of the Time
