Position Summary
The Simons Foundation’s Flatiron Institute seeks full-time Associate Research Scientists as part of its new initiative, Foundation Models for Science. Recent advances in machine learning, including Large Language Models and diffusion based generative models have driven significant advances in Artificial Intelligence. The Flatiron Institute seeks to leverage these ideas to develop the next generation of AI-powered scientific analysis tools, seeking more powerful and more interpretable models with broad applications to many scientific disciplines. Our group includes researchers from multiple scientific disciplines ranging from machine learning, to astrophysics, biology, neuroscience and quantum computing. The selected candidates will work closely with a group of computer scientists, domain scientists, and AI experts in developing and leveraging large language models and large AI models to solve pressing scientific challenges.
The Flatiron Institute has computational capabilities allowing training of fairly large AI models. We offer an exciting multidisciplinary context for researching AI and its applications. This is a full-time termed position with a duration of one year (with potential extension depending on the status of the project). This position is based in Simons Foundation’s offices in New York City.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities
- Develop relevant computational techniques in large AI models
- Develop and train large AI models for pressing scientific questions
- Curate large datasets pertinent to the initiative
- Present and publish papers at conferences
- Collaborate with other Flatiron research fellows, research analysts, and graduate and undergraduate students.
- Mentor students and postdocs as necessary
- Perform any other duties or tasks as required by the initiative
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Ph.D. in a related field or equivalent experience
Experience
- At least 1 or more years of postgraduate research experience in computational sciences, including Machine Learning, computational astrophysics, computational biology, climate research, computer sciences and/or other relevant fields.
- A record of excellence in scientific publication in the aforementioned fields.
- Expertise in large AI models, computational methods, data analysis, software and algorithm development, modeling, or scientific simulation.
- Ability to do original and outstanding research in computational sciences and its relevant field.
- Ability to work well independently as well as in a collaborative team environment, in-person as well as via online channels.
- Ability to handle multiple projects at the same time; and,
- Ability to present research and other types of work, internally and externally

Compensation And Benefits
- The full-time annual compensation range for this position is $125,000 – $180,000, depending on experience.
