Occupational Summary:

The Assistant Director of Development, Duke Health, reports to the Executive Director of Development, Duke Health and is responsible for fundraising primarily for gifts of $25k-$99k for the departments staffed by the Neuroscience and Behavioral Health (NSBH) grateful patient fundraising team supporting the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neurobiology, Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, and The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center. Serves as a member of the Neuroscience and Behavioral Health and Individual Giving fundraising team and helps donors see the relationship between patient care and the underlying science, research, and educational needs within Duke Health.

 

Work Performed:

Fundraising 70%
  • Successfully identify, qualify, cultivate and solicit special gifts prospects.
  • Working in coordination with administration, faculty, and volunteers as appropriate, recommend and implement cultivation and solicitation strategies for grateful patient prospects. 
  • Secure gifts in support of evergreen funding priorities as established by Duke Health leadership.
  • Write or assist in drafting proposals and other materials as necessary.
  • Assist in planning and/or directing cultivation events or programs.
  • Coordinate appropriate recognition and stewardship activities for donors.
  • Work successfully with colleagues across the institution to collaborate on prospects with multiple interests.

 

Prospect Identification (20%)
  • With a special focus on building a pipeline for special and major gifts within the NSBH team, build partnerships with major gift colleagues on the NSBH team to increase and manage faculty physician referrals of grateful patients to enhance special gift conversations.
  • As appropriate, build partnerships and maintain regular communication with faculty physicians across the NSBH areas to increase and manage the level of faculty physician referrals of grateful patients to enhance special gift conversations.
  • Provide consistent referrals to leadership annual giving, planned giving, and major gifts colleagues.
  • Work in close coordination and with annual, major and planned giving officers.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with colleagues on all Duke Health fundraising teams to ensure comprehensive coverage of prospects and donors.
 
Portfolio Management 10%
  • Develop contact reports and enter moves and data into tracking databases.
  • Successfully maintain and manage a portfolio of special gifts prospects.
  • Follow procedures in coordination with the Office of Gift Records to ensure effective collecting, recording, accounting, acknowledgment and follow-up on all private gifts from assigned donors.
  • Follow best fundraising and operational practices for Duke Health Development & Alumni Affairs.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

 

Department Preferences/Skills

  • The ideal candidate will possess the following qualities/attributes: outstanding written and oral communication skills, and a collaborative nature. Familiarity with academic healthcare environments is highly desirable.
  • Must be a self-starter with a sense of urgency, a clear set of priorities, and the ability to adapt to and lead through changing circumstances in an environment where working across boundaries and leveraging strengths are necessary.
  • Some travel and flexibility in work hours will be necessary at times to accomplish objectives and satisfy goals.

 

Education/Training:

Work requires completion of a bachelor’s degree program.

 

Experience:

Work requires a minimum of five years’ experience in alumni affairs, public relations, fund raising, sales and promotions, marketing, student activities or a related field in order to acquire skills necessary to administer, coordinate and/or participate in general fund-raising activities and proposal development. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

 

Duke Health Development & Alumni Affairs is building a flexible and hybrid workplace. Depending on the type of position and work performed, or as deemed by manager, some positions may be required to work intermittently in an office located in Durham, NC.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education
  • Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor’s degree program.

 

Experience
  • Work requires five years experience in alumni affairs, public OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE. relations, fund raising, sales and promotions, marketing, student activities or a related field in order to acquire skills necessary to administer, coordinate and/or participate in general fund-raising activities and proposal development.
