Electrical Engineer – Wireless Power Transfer

About the Job

In this role you will work alongside our engineering team to translate a novel wireless energy transfer technology from an academic lab to a robust commercial offering. Motif’s technology consists of a small implant wirelessly powered via magnetic fields from an external wearable transmitter. Motif is manufacturing this technology in house and will need a robust and compliant set of systems to streamline and scale production.

Motif is a startup, so this role will allow one to extend beyond the strict outline in this job description as the whole company will generally jump on and help in various operational capacities.

Job Location: Houston, TX

What is Motif?

Motif is a medical device startup based in Houston, Texas. We are designing and developing minimally invasive electronic solutions for serious mental health conditions. Powered by our patent-pending methods for wireless power and data transmission, our goal is to create the smallest implantable brain stimulator and deliver therapies to patients by 2024.

We are a seed-stage startup with funding from both venture capital firms, grants, and private angel and founder investments.

Where are we going, and how can you help?

We are currently completing the development of our first minimally invasive neural stimulation system and preparing for future versions with additional functionality based on our platform technology.

We are looking for an Electrical Engineer for our Houston-based operations to assist with transfer of a magnetic wireless energy transfer system developed extensively in an academic lab to a commercial manufacturable state. This includes hands-on process development of the magnetic films, creation of test and verification methods for the films, selection and qualification of equipment for a scalable manufacturing line, and potential automation of both build and test systems in the future. Work may extend to the development, characterization, and test of hermetic enclosures and electrode designs. This is an unique opportunity to drive maturation of these novel technologies and fully understand mechanisms of action, characterization and optimization performance across all relevant variables, and help drive commercialization in a novel neuroscience application.

The Right Partner

Motif is being built by highly dedicated people with passion for neurotechnology, clinical product development, and putting the patient first. We are looking for people with the same energy who will thrive in a high growth – high autonomy environment.

Does this sound like you?

  • Do you want to create a future where technology enables better mental health care?
  • Do you enjoy learning about and driving novel technology?
  • Do you like testing hypotheses, solving problems, and moving quickly?
  • Do you believe that openness and honesty are key to team success?

If yes to the above, then you may love working with Motif.

In this role, you will…

  • Learn to build wireless energy transfer components by using common capital equipment for medical device manufacturing (laser cutting and etching systems, material deposition sputter systems, epoxy preparation, electrical workstations, 3D printers, etc.)
  • Complete initial characterization of systems and alter configurations based on results/data
  • Understand the impact of system attributes on performance
  • Generate test and measurement infrastructure for verifying system performance
  • Collaboratively design and edit Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Work Instructions (WIs), Production Travelers (PTs), and other relevant Quality Management System (QMS) documents to support translation of the wireless energy transfer technology to clinical study and commercial devices
  • Test system components in pre-clinical studies and clinical environments
  • Interact with software such as Google Suite/Workspace, project management tools, medical device electronic quality management system (eQMS), internally built engineering test fixtures and setups, and various measurement instruments
  • In the early stages of the company, you will also assist with setting up and designing the ab and prototype manufacturing workspace

You Will Need

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or Materials Engineering or similar
  • A strong background in material science, electrical measurement and test, and understanding of analog electronics
  • Experience working in laboratory and manufacturing environments
  • The ability to program in python or similar
  • The ability to test, debug and troubleshoot systems
  • The ability to design or update existing QMS documents
  • Communication and teamwork skills to work with different engineers (electrical, material, quality, etc.)
  • The ability to work within a multi-disciplinary fast-paced start-up environment balancing multiple projects
  • To be located in (or willing to relocate to) the Houston, TX area

It is a bonus if you are:

  • Experienced developing manufacturing spaces or early-stage medical devices under IEC 60601 and ISO 13485
  • Experience in wireless power transfer, electromagnetic fields, or high power coil design
  • Have a master’s degree
  • Have more than 1 year of experience in industry
  • Experience with hermetic packaging, electrode characterization, electrical stimulation, or electrode-tissue interfaces

Benefits
  • Compensation will be a blend of salary and equity that is commensurate with experience
  • Participation in our 401k plan
  • Health/Medical Insurance
