Responsibilities
A Postdoctoral research positions are available in the laboratory of Dr. Wolfdieter Springer to investigate pathogenic mechanisms of neurodegeneration at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.
The Springer lab focusses on selective autophagy pathways, in particular mitophagy, and how alterations therein contribute to aging and neurodegenerative disorders. The lab employs a multi-disciplinary approach using state-of-the-art techniques in cell biology, biochemistry, and imaging to illuminate the underlying disease biology in iPSC-derived cell and organoid models, in vivo in mice, and in human clinical and neuropathological specimens.
The Research Fellow will support ongoing research projects related to PINK1-PRKN mitophagy.
Specific research projects include:
- Investigation of selective autophagy mechanisms in Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia, and Parkinson’s
- Biomarker development to monitor selective autophagy pathways in cells, tissues, and biofluids,
- Validation of disease signatures resulting from altered mitophagy, as well as
- Genetic and pharmacological stimulation of mitophagy during aging and neurodegeneration. Specific tasks and objectives include support of cell culture, gene-editing, and mouse and human autopsy brain tissue analyses using a variety of molecular, cellular, biochemical, and imaging techniques and the execution of informative research experiments that test a proposed hypothesis.
The individual will be trained to design experiments, set up experimental conditions as well as to analyze, graph, interpret and discuss outcomes. The individual is expected to thoroughly document the experimental conditions, goals and results and to further skills to interact and work collaboratively as part of a team of laboratory researchers. Effective written and oral communication skills are required. Continuous 360 degree evaluation will help achieve training and career goals.
- Applications are invited from highly motivated candidates holding a recent Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. with a strong research background in neuroscience, cell biology, or biochemistry.
- Expertise in iPSC models, mouse work, or multi-omics approaches is desirable. In addition, qualified candidates should have a record of impactful, peer-reviewed publications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English are essential.
How to Apply:
Qualified candidates should send a cover letter outlining research interests and achievements along with their curriculum vitae to Wolfdieter Springer (Springer.Wolfdieter@mayo.edu).
