Summary

The Research Program on Cognition and Neuromodulation Based Interventions (RP-CNBI) at the University of Michigan (https://hampstead.lab.medicine.umich.edu) announces an opening for a full-time research post-doctoral position. The program’s mission is to implement novel and effective non-pharmacological treatments for individuals with cognitive impairments due to neurologic injury and/or disease. RP-CNBI integrates neuropsychological theory with multi-modal neuroimaging techniques and non-pharmacological treatments. 

The research fellow will be jointly supervised by Drs. Alex Iordan and Benjamin Hampstead and perform advanced analyses  of multi-modal neuroimaging data from ongoing projects/clinical trials supported by 11 grants totaling over 13 million in NIH/DOD  funding.  

The fellow will have access to a variety of research techniques, including:

• Multi-modal imaging: functional MRI, functional near-infrared spectroscopy, MR spectroscopy, functional MRS, positron emission tomography, arterial spin labeling, diffusion MRI
• Neuromodulation: transcranial electric stimulation (tDCS, tACS), transcranial magnetic stimulation
• Cognitive rehabilitation using computerized tasks and virtual reality

RP-CNBI is directed by Dr. Benjamin Hampstead and includes a research program manager, two assistant professors, two clinical postdoctoral fellows, two research supervisors, and 13 full time research technicians, as well several undergraduate volunteers. The program provides state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, including dedicated space for offices and research (six testing/research rooms), 14 high-definition tDCS devices, two fNIRS devices, TMS lab, and access to two research-dedicated 3.0T MRI scanners and a PET scanner. 

The successful candidate will have outstanding opportunities for networking and career development within the U-M Medical School and the Department of Psychiatry, as well as via multiple inter-departmental collaborations and the U-M Postdoctoral Association (e.g., grant writing, intra-/extramural funding, statistics). The fellow will also have opportunities to pursue additional research based on their interests in an active, inter-disciplinary, and highly collaborative environment.

Responsibilities*

Works with various study teams to ensure proper acquisition, storage, quality control, analysis, and visualization of neuroimaging data. 

• Uses MRI data to create individualized models of brain stimulation using available software (e.g., ROAST, SimNIBS). Leads region of interest-based collection of data from these models.
• Assists with the creation of posters, manuscripts, and presentations for scientific meetings and/or grant submissions.
• Performs neuromodulation sessions per study protocol.
• Provides other support to the program as directed.

Required Qualifications*

• This position requires a PhD degree
• Knowledge of brain anatomy and dementia.
• Demonstrable expertise with fMRI analyses. Working knowledge of other neuroimaging methods (e.g., fNIRS, PET) is a plus. 
• Experience with TMS, EEG, and eye tracking data acquisition and analysis are also welcome.
• Strong statistical and computer programming skills, including scripting (i.e., MATLAB, SPM, Freesurfer, R, Python, Shell, & Git).   
• Productive publication record.

Work Schedule: M-F, evening and weekend hours as needed
