Position Description

We seek an experienced scientist to advance our research at the University of California, Los Angeles Department of Neurology in the laboratory of Dr. Engel.

Dr. Engel’s laboratory studies mechanisms of epilepsy and epileptogenesis. Our research focuses on investigation of electrographic correlates of epilepsy during ictal and interictal periods, investigation of mechanisms of this disease in patients and animal models of chronic epilepsy. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing behavioral and electrophysiological experiment on AD mutant rats and supervising undergraduate students. The salary range for this position is $71,500 to $82,500.

 

Specific Responsibilities

The person should have certification to work. Responsibilities of this position include making microelectrodes for implantation in rat brains, handling animals before behavioral experiments, performing behavioral experiments in Barnes maze and open field paradigms, carrying out electrophysiological experiments, which include 24h/ EEG-video monitoring. The candidate should know the normal and abnormal patterns of rat-brain electrical activity on EEG and be able to distinguish these patterns from different types of artifacts. The candidate should know how to work with the INTAN data acquisition system and EEGLAB to perform initial cleaning of experimental data. In behavioral experiments candidate should know how to use ANYMAZE software. The data analysis should be performed at a level acceptable for potential publications in international scientific journals. The candidate will be responsible for writing manuscripts after completion of a series of experiments and potentially writing grant proposals.

 

Qualifications

Applicants must have a PhD and postdoctoral fellowship. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in the following areas: experimental epilepsy, brain electrophysiology and histology, animal behavior, data analysis and statistics.

 

Additional Duties

  • Ability to work on multiple projects efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to work independently on scientific projects
  • Required to communicate well with other scientists.
  • Candidate should have 5 years research experience in neuroscience in an academic setting or equivalent.
  • The candidate will report directly to the Principal Investigator and will successfully carry out experiments and analyze the data generated with minimal supervision.
