Position Summary

Provides support to federal and grassroots advocacy efforts of the SfN Advocacy and Training department. Supports committee activities, provides administrative support to SfN programming such as correspondence and scheduling, and supports communication about advocacy, and policy positions.

 

Essential Job Functions

Advocacy
  • Assist department in implementing advocacy efforts in support of scientific research, including helping to organize and execute Capitol Hill Day activities; assisting with communications and outreach to Capitol Hill offices, supporting SfN members for in-district meetings and laboratory tours with legislators; and assist in the engagement of positive, proactive communications concerning the role of animals in research.
  • Help communicate with SfN members through the Advocacy Network, and other SfN communication channels.

 

Administration
  • Provide logistical and organizational support for all in-person and online meetings and events for the Government and Public Affairs Committee and Committee on Animals in Research, including travel, documentation, and other activities as needed.
  • Provide logistical and organizational support for Advocacy Department-related events at the SfN Annual Meeting – including SfN booth presence and Poster Floor Tours for visiting officials.
  • Participate as a supportive and engaged team member to ensure successful execution of special projects and events.
  • Coordinate general office administration, including financial requests, invoicing, and expense tracking.

 

Communication
  • Assist with the writing, proofreading, editing, and compilation of departmental communications, correspondence and publications; solicit content for and compile the monthly Advocacy Network Newsletter for review and edit by the Advocacy Associate.
  • Support drafting of copy for social media initiatives and other promotional needs of the department.
  • Contribute to the process for regularly sending new SfN public information material to key contacts on Capitol Hill and the SfN Marking, Digital Learning and Digital Strategies Departments.
  • Maintain SfN webpages that track issues pertaining to neuroscience funding, animals in research and other science policy concerns.

 

General Duties
  • Serve as an engaged and involved team member, supportive of the varied experiences and perspectives of internal and external colleagues.
  • Support and actively build an office culture dedicated to superior customer service that exceeds member expectations.
  • Work within the team and among teams to ensure that decisions are made to further the organization’s goals.

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from a 4 year college or university required.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the federal policy issues, or the government affairs department of an association is preferred.
  • Candidates with a science education background are preferred.

Location:

Remote – DMV Required: Remote employees that must be based in the DMV area for reasons related to their position do not need to come into the office. Employees can work remotely in the DMV area as part of a 35-hour workweek with core hours from 10am-3pm Eastern time, and a reliable high-speed internet connection is essential.
