About Synchron

Synchron is a clinical-stage endovascular brain computer interface (BCI) company. Since 2012, the company has been developing a BCI platform that avoids the need for open brain surgery by using a minimally-invasive procedure. The Synchron Switch™ BCI received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation in 2020, and is currently in human clinical trials in the US and Australia.

The company recently announced an oversubscribed $75 million Series C financing round led by ARCH Venture Partners, with participation from Gates Frontier, Bezos Expeditions and other top-tier investors. The funds will accelerate product development, facilitate commencement of a pivotal clinical trial, and advance Synchron towards a first-in-class BCI market approval for the treatment of paralysis.

The Synchron Switch™ brain computer interface is implanted in the blood vessel on the surface of the motor cortex of the brain via the jugular vein, through a minimally-invasive endovascular procedure. Once implanted, it is designed to detect and wirelessly transmit motor intent out of the brain, restoring a capability for severely paralyzed patients to control personal devices with hands-free point-and-click. Synchron is a dynamic, multi-disciplinary and rapidly growing team.

Join our mission of developing a first-in-class commercial BCI for more than 100 million people worldwide with upper limb impairment. Help people with previously untreatable conditions regain connection to the world.

Job Description:

We are seeking a skilled BCI Cloud Data Engineer with a strong background in setting up and maintaining interactive cloud infrastructure that is optimized for neuro-electrophysiological data.  As a vital member of our team, you will be responsible for continuing to build out and optimize our cloud-based solutions that empower our products and data scientists to perform their work efficiently and effectively. Your expertise in cloud development and working with neuro-electrophysiological data will contribute to the seamless execution of data pipelines, the creation of a user-friendly Python API, and the development of robust database and visualization tools. Additionally, you will play a key role in ensuring secure access to the infrastructure and in scaling our system to accommodate a growing number of users.

Responsibilities:

  • Define optimal data infrastructure for Synchron’s neuroprosthetic dataset across the variety of AWS services available to create an ecosystem for collaboration.
  • Set up infrastructure to support the automatic execution of data pipelines, enabling streamlined data processing and analysis in the cloud.
  • Develop a Python API that empowers data scientists to harness the full capabilities of the cloud infrastructure and execute their tasks seamlessly.
  • Build and manage a scalable database to store pipeline outputs and data scientist work sessions, ensuring data integrity and easy retrieval.
  • Create visualization tools and interfaces for data scientists to explore and interpret information stored in the database, enhancing the decision-making process.
  • Implement robust security measures to ensure secure access to the cloud infrastructure, data, and applications.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to continuously optimize and enhance the platform’s performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to data scientists, assisting them in effectively utilizing the cloud-based tools and resources.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and improvement of an existing research cloud platform, leveraging your expertise to enhance its capabilities and functionality.
  • Stay updated with the latest developments in cloud technologies, data science frameworks (Numpy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow), and best practices, and apply them to drive innovation within the organization.

Qualifications:

  • Qualified candidates will have academic and professional experience with neurology and computer science in some combination.  Bachelors’ degree required; Ph.D. and more advanced scientific training encouraged to apply.
  • Experience in working with neuro-electrophysiological data sets.
  • Experience in working with synchronized multi-stream, multi-dimensional time-series data.
  • Proven experience in designing, implementing, and maintaining cloud-based solutions using AWS services, including Lambda functions and SageMaker.
  • Proficiency in Python programming and experience building APIs for data manipulation and interaction.
  • Strong understanding of data science frameworks such as Numpy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, PyTorch, and TensorFlow.
  • Familiarity with database design, management, and optimization, including SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • Solid knowledge of security principles and practices for cloud-based environments.
  • Experience in developing visualization tools and interfaces for data analysis.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive attitude towards identifying and resolving technical challenges.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Prior experience with horizontally scalable systems and handling a large number of users is a plus.

Join our dynamic team and contribute to the advancement of our cutting-edge cloud infrastructure that empowers data scientists to drive meaningful insights and innovations. If you are passionate about cloud technologies, data science, and creating impactful solutions, we invite you to apply and be part of our journey.
