Job Details
The Department of Biological and Health Sciences (BHS) at Wheaton College (IL) seeks candidates for a one-year appointment as a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor of Neuroscience or as a full-time post-doctoral fellow, starting in August 2024. A PhD in neuroscience, psychology, computer science, or a closely-related field is preferred. Candidates from all areas of neuroscience are encouraged to apply. Current facilities include EGI high-density EEG, portable and in-lab NIRx functional near-infrared spectroscopy, Tobii eye-tracking, and equipment to collect peripheral psychophysiological data. The department also houses a vivarium for animal husbandry and associated animal lab testing areas. The successful candidate will join a dedicated team of teacher-scholars in a Division that plans to expand teaching and scholarly opportunities in bioinformatics, neuroscience, and public health as part of a College-wide strategic investment process.
The Visiting Assistant Professor will be involved in developing an expanding curriculum in the neurosciences and is expected to (1) teach introductory neuroscience courses and associated laboratories, (2) coordinate the introductory neuroscience laboratories (plan the laboratories and manage the laboratory teaching assistants), (3) teach 1-2 additional upper-level neuroscience courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, and (4) potentially teach 1-2 other courses as-needed in the Biological and Health Sciences Curriculum (e.g., Introduction to Biology, Research Methods).
Candidates interested in the post-doctoral position would have a reduced teaching load, allowing for more time to dedicate to research. Post-doctoral candidates could bring data with them to analyze and disseminate, assist current Neuroscience faculty with the analysis and dissemination of in-house data, or participate in ongoing data collection efforts using the state-of-the-art equipment mentioned above. In addition, Dr. Thom was recently awarded a Templeton grant to study the neural correlates of contemplation while viewing art, yet another opportunity the post-doc could take advantage of.
Information about the current Neuroscience curriculum, including the Introductory Neuroscience course (NEUR 241), is located here and here. Please address any questions regarding this position to the Director of the Neuroscience program, Dr. Nathaniel Thom, nate.thom@wheaton.edu. Review of applicants will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
