Senior Technical Research Assistant Neurology Venkatesh Lab – (3261600)
The Venkatesh Lab is seeking a highly motivated senior lab technician to join our pioneering research efforts in the emerging field of cancer neuroscience. Our lab’s exciting new area of research lies at the intersection of cancer biology and neuroscience – we focus on characterizing and therapeutically targeting electrical components of disease pathophysiologies. By improving our understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in neuron-cancer communication and circuit formation in and outside of the brain, the Venkatesh Lab aims to harness the systems level microenvironmental dependencies of tumor growth to develop innovative therapeutic treatments.
We are looking for a senior lab technician with a background in neuroscience or cancer research, single cell and or bulk/RNA sequencing experience, molecular techniques, and the ability to attain a high degree of independence in a new and dynamic research environment. In this role, the individual will conduct a variety of experiments including work in a small cell lung cancer mouse model.
Principal Duties And Responsibilities:
- Work collaboratively with others in the lab to generate data for publications.
- Maintain and oversee mouse colony.
- Perform mammalian cell culture, western blotting, cloning, qRT-PCR, and other cell biology and molecular biology experiments.
- Responsible for laboratory upkeep and routine maintenance of equipment. Maintain laboratory supplies and equipment including chemicals, biological materials, cell stocks, etc.
- Perform routine cell culture techniques, including cell passage, freezing, and thawing.
- Perform immunochemical assays such as ELISA, IHC, and BLI.
- Help train and supervise junior technicians and students according to lab protocols.
- Perform any additional duties or tasks as assigned by the PI or lab manager as needs arise.
Qualifications:
- MSc preferred, bachelor’s degree in biology or related major required. 3-5 years of relevant laboratory experience required.
- Experience and comfortability with mouse handling, husbandry, and dissection.
- Experience running, troubleshooting, and planning molecular biology experiments.
- 2-3 years of cell culture experience preferred.
- Experience single cell sequencing and/or RNA sequencing (library prep, tissue dissociation) a plus but not required.
Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required:
- Good organizational skills, detail oriented
- Sound degree of computer literacy
- Ability to methodically record data and to analyze data using basic statistics.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills.
- Ability to demonstrate professionalism.
- Work independently after initial training with minimum supervision. Discusses progress of work regularly with supervisor.
- Analyze, visualize, and document experimental data in electronic laboratory notebooks in a timely and accurate manner.
Working Conditions:
- Requires work in an environment where animals are used for research.
- Position may at times require the employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials are present.
