Position Summary:

The Hardware Engineering Manager is responsible for leading a cross-disciplinary team to create hardware projects for Cadwell’s product lines of Class I and II medical devices. As a key member of the team, the Hardware Engineering Manager will define product features and performance, work independently to complete tasks, and serve as a mentor to hardware engineers. This position reports directly to the Director of Hardware Engineering and plays a critical role in ensuring hardware designs meet performance requirements, company standards and regulatory requirements.

 

Key Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of circuit, firmware, and mechanical designers.
  • Lead the design of new applications and the development of new features for existing applications.
  • Oversee the design of embedded digital systems, low-level analog circuits, DC-DC power converters, and high-voltage circuits.
  • Review test procedures for system production checkout, circuit boards, and service troubleshooting and repair, facilitating the verification and calibration of Cadwell instruments.
  • Analyze results, identify problem areas and design improvements, and act as a consultant for root-cause analysis investigations.
  • Review documentation of hardware modules and projects, ensuring compliance with company hardware document control policies and federal and international regulations.
  • Interface with multi-disciplinary teams consisting of product specialists, clinicians, marketing, marketing, and finance to ensure a successful product.
  • Lead the hardware process development work, including producing estimates, tracking project execution, communicating status, and conducting project reviews with management and the team.
  • Participate in clinical validation activities as required.
  • Engage in technical presentations to both small and large groups.
  • Identify and document intellectual property and prepare related paperwork for submission to protect through the patent process.
  • Offer technical mentoring and guidance to electrical/hardware engineers including career development and motivation of the individuals within the department.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, technical developments, and state-of-the-art product offerings in Cadwell’s target markets, and utilize best practices to complete projects and assignments.
  • Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.

 

Education / Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field required.
  • 10+ years of experience in electrical engineering design required.
  • 6+ years of digital and analog design experience at Cadwell, or equivalent experience in medical design engineering related to the production of electronic products.

 

Job Knowledge / Requirements:

  • In-depth experience with Cadwell’s products or similar products and their clinical use is preferred.
  • Strong background in hardware engineering fundamentals, including electronics, electronic design, networking, protocols, circuitry, CAD, and related programming.
  • Knowledge of medical device safety and regulatory standards (IEC 60601, etc)
  • Proven experience as a project lead in defining, developing, executing, and documenting hardware test plans and procedures.
  • Ability to work both independently and as an effective member of a team, adapting to changing requirements, deadlines, and priorities as needed.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, including MS Office and Google applications, query tools, and database systems, as well as engineering applications.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills in English, including the ability to understand, explain, present, and document complex technical processes and issues.
  • Capable of assisting in solving complex clinical issues with Cadwell equipment.
  • Ability to interact with co-workers and customers with a professional and solutions-oriented approach.
  • Commitment to conducting research and work to produce high-quality designed Cadwell products, meeting deadlines and specifications.
  • Willingness to provide feedback to executive management for making improvements to existing company processes.

 

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions:

  • Positions working with Cadwell equipment may require reaching, bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying up to 50 pounds, as well as finger dexterity, repetitive motions, standing, walking, sitting, hearing, visual acuity, color vision, and two-way written/verbal communication. More specific details may be provided as needed or requested.
  • Extensive use of computers.
  • Travel may be required; must be able to obtain necessary travel documents.
  • Work hours outside normal business hours may be required to meet business needs.
