Job Description

The Department of Biology, in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program , the Aging Studies Institute, and BioInspired Institute at Syracuse University is pleased to announce the availability of two tenure-track positions in the dynamic and broad field of neuroscience. These positions are part of an ambitious Invest Syracuse Cluster Hire Initiative. As an integral part of this investment, Syracuse University is actively recruiting multiple candidates for faculty positions for a cohesive research cluster in the focus area of Neuroscience and Aging. We invite accomplished candidates to join our collaborative community of scientists and contribute to a multidisciplinary research cluster focused on advancing our understanding of the biology of aging, with a specific emphasis on neurodegenerative disease.

The research environment at Syracuse University is highly collaborative both within and between departments, research centers, and institutes as well as the adjacent Upstate Medical University. The Biology Department at Syracuse University currently has 30 full-time faculty with research strengths in neurobiology, cell, developmental and evolutionary biology, and plant and ecosystem ecology. The Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program brings together students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty across multiple colleges and academic units for the purposes of fostering neuroscience education and research to promote interdisciplinary training. The Aging Studies Institute is an all-university institute that coordinates and promotes aging-related research and education, while BioInspired at Syracuse brings together faculty specializing in the mechanics of living tissues to provide proof of concept for new approaches to understanding and treating developmental anomalies and disease.

 

Competitive salary, start-up funds, and laboratory space will be provided. Located between the Adirondack Mountain, Finger Lakes, and Lake Ontario regions of upstate New York, the metropolitan area of Syracuse boasts myriad cultural and recreational opportunities and offers a wide array of urban, small town, and rural living. Qualifications    

  • Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Biology, or a related field with a strong research focus on the biology of aging as it pertains to neurodegenerative disease.
  • Syracuse University is interested in candidates who have the communication skills and cross-cultural abilities to maximize their effectiveness with diverse groups of colleagues, students, and community members.

 

Job Specific Qualifications         

  • Responsibilities Responsibilities include teaching two courses per year (1:1 load), research, and service.
  • Faculty hired into these positions will build on existing strengths in cell and molecular neurobiology, behavioral and systems neuroscience, neurological disease modeling, neuropharmacology and toxicology, developmental neurobiology, and astrocyte biology and will establish their research labs in the world-class Life Sciences Complex.
  • The successful candidates are expected to develop a vigorous externally funded research program and show dedication to teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.
