Automation Systems Engineer
Hardware – Waterloo, Ontario, Canada – Full Time

About You:

You’re a creative thinker with a passion for understanding the complete system for complex assembly and test processes. You have a knack for collecting and documenting requirements and ensuring that the team understands them. You enjoy getting to the root of problems through analysis and developing solutions to improve system performance. You love to collaborate with other teams to define requirements, troubleshoot problems, and work toward validated solutions in support of R&D, Engineering and Manufacturing goals.

What You’ll Do:

  • Work closely with other teams to define, develop, document, and understand system requirements
  • Design and execute test plans to validate that systems meet requirements
  • Develop Proof-of-Concept equipment for high risk or complex applications and work with teams to build and test equipment
  • Become a liaison with manufacturing and R&D groups to learn processes and ensure that equipment builds,
    tests, integration, and commissioning are aligned to the input requirements
  • Develop workflows, standards and procedures for developing and validating automated equipment
  • Support specification of equipment and collaborate with external vendors
  • Review system feasibility and alternative configurations and technologies for meeting system requirements
  • Perform systems engineering analysis and design for the development of new and existing equipment. Examples may include:
  • system accuracy and error analysis
    cycle time evaluations
    Statistical analysis
    DOE
    thermal reliability
    simulations

  • Support development of new and existing test and calibration systems toward yield improvements and mass production solutions
  • What You’ll Need:

  • A BS/BE in Systems Engineering, Mechatronics or related discipline
  • 5+ years System Engineering experience with automated equipment
  • Excellent technical and problem solving skills
  • Experience creating requirements documentation
  • Experience with writing and executing test and validation plans
  • Experienced with continuous improvement practices and tools
  • Knowledge of PLCs, electronics, robotics and automation
  • Knowledge of precision engineering principles
  • Strong project management skills
  • Application knowledge of ergonomic and machine safety standards
  • Excellent teamwork and collaboration capabilities in addition to effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Capable of independently formulating concepts and systems solutions to complex technical problems
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Bonus Points For:

  • Experience developing machine vision systems for various applications (e.g. part inspection; process validation; robotic guidance)
  • Consumer electronics experience
  • Previous work experience in a startup
  • Having launched a product
  • Worked in wearables
  • Experience with machine vision, image processing, and robotic programming
  • Expertise or interest in machine learning
  • Manufacturing experience
