About the role
“Building hardware is tough” is a sentence you are probably familiar with if you know what we are talking about.
Creating medical-grade wearable devices is so complex that only a few companies have attempted it, and an even smaller percentage of them have succeeded; Empatica is proudly among the latter ones.
If you are up to face such a challenge, Empatica is the right place for you!
We are looking for a talented Mechanical Engineer willing to take on the challenge of bringing new products from the R&D phase to actual mass-scale production. By directly working on the mechanical design of such products, you’ll play a key role in Empatica’s mission of saving people’s life.
You will join a multidisciplinary team of engineers with various backgrounds (i.e. ME, EE, and FW), thus experiencing the full technological stack at the core of product development. You will be responsible for the design and selection of mechanical building-blocks and sensor sets for new products, iterating on their design from prototyping to production. You will work closely with Electrical Engineers to integrate electronics and sensors into compact mechanical embodiments, advising on techniques to aid product assembly (e.g. assembly features, fixtures, …) and deepening your knowledge of manufacturing processes.
You will drive the go-to-production of your designs by interacting with manufacturers, clearing DFM requirements and releasing technical drawings. You will have to validate your designs by carrying out prototyping builds and running tests to assess compliance with initial product requirements as well as regulatory ones, to make sure you’re delivering to the market high-quality, safe products. Last but not least, you will have full access to a dedicated lab where to carry out all the hardware investigations and explorations needed to build top-notch solutions.
In addition, working together with other Mechanical Engineers you will:
- Support Empatica’s Mechanical Team in engineering and 3D modeling for all products under development and new releases
- Engage in a variety of prototyping methods to test the design and sensor efficacy
- Provide expert input on the design for manufacturability and assembly analysis (DFM/A) and cost implication assessments (DFC) for sheet metal, plastic injection molded parts, as well as a variety of electro-mechanical assemblies
- Perform tolerance analysis and apply GD&T principles in creating new product specifications
- Apply statistical methods for estimating yield, failure, risk, and process capability
- Focus on root-cause analysis (RCA) of failure modes, predictive modeling, and integration of detailed engineering test processes as a component of complete product quality through the manufacturing process
- Possess and/or develop expert mechanical fabrication understanding for plastic, ceramic, and metal components
- Implement rigorous test programs and processes to ensure 100% quality on the out-going finished product
- Resolve manufacturing and field issues by applying engineering knowledge and skills, escalating issues associated with design, manufacturing, and testing to appropriate partners in the organization
- Work closely with suppliers and contract manufacturer to ensure products are delivered on time, on specs, on budget
- Support the creation of BOMs, AVL, and ECO/ECN through the NPI phases and into sustaining. Integrate with PLM/PDM systems
Important detail:
- Empatica is an international environment with offices in Europe and the US, and so we conduct all our work in English
- We are operating a hybrid model where our employees choose whether to work from home or come to the office, however, please note that this position is not fully remote, and your in-office presence will be required on certain occasions
Requirements
You are the ideal person for this job if you:
- Have BS/MS in Engineering Discipline, preferably ME
- Have a minimum 3-5 years of experience in a similar role
- Have Excellent communication skills with the ability to clearly and concisely explain ideas at all levels of the company
- Have strong 3D CAD skills
- Have demonstrated experience in high-volume consumer or medical device manufacturing
- Have a data-driven bent nature with a get-it-done MO
- Have experience with on-shore and off-shore manufacturing partners
- Are available to travel up to 20% to our headquarters in Boston/Seoul, with some irregular work hours to support overseas partners and co-workers
- Are flexible to adapt to an extremely dynamic and quickly changing work environment
