About the job

When: Summer of 2024, exact dates flexible.
Duration: 12 weeks.

Sonera is building state-of-the-art magnetic sensors that can be used in ambient conditions at room temperature while maintaining high sensitivity. We are looking for a talented and driven neuroscientist to join our research efforts and work closely with our hardware and software engineers towards developing a novel biosensing system using these solid-state magnetic sensors.

The work will initially concentrate on assisting with non-invasive physiological experiments to measure skeletal muscle and heart activity on human subjects using both electrical and magnetic sensors. As the experimental procedure becomes streamlined and the dataset becomes comprehensive, the focus will transition towards analyzing collected data to assess the capabilities of magnetic sensors, compare electrical and magnetic signals, and use machine learning techniques to enable various applications.

The ideal candidate will have experience with neuroscience research in both collecting and analyzing physiological data. This person will be comfortable with hands-on troubleshooting, handling and analyzing large, complex datasets, and learning quickly on the job.

Requirements

  • Assist in data collection of human physiological data
  • Improve the pipeline for preprocessing, denoising, and extracting meaningful biological data from the recorded signals.
  • Employ statistical analyses to analyze and compare different signal types
  • Build, train, and optimize machine learning models for classification using complex, multichannel datasets consisting of various types of sensors
  • Work closely with the engineering teams to develop systems for data collection as well as determine optimal hardware design and software architecture

Core Skills And Experience

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program in neuroscience, an engineering discipline, or other relevant field.
  • 1+ years of experience collecting and analyzing electrical or magnetic muscle or neural signals (EEG, ECoG, MEG, EMG, MMG, etc.)
  • Experience in basic circuits, digital signal processing, data analysis, and coding (Python, MATLAB, Jupyter, etc.)
  • Knowledge of common ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, etc.)
  • Excellent presentation and writing skills
  • Experience in multimodal sensing, sensor fusion, or human subject research is a plus

Experiences Gained Through The Role

  • Industry neuroscience R&D from experimental design to data collection and analysis
  • Heavily interdisciplinary collaboration with various teams of diverse backgrounds, including software engineers, electrical engineers, and material scientists.
  • Processes underlying novel sensor design and development
  • Insight into operations of a neurotech startup
