Drive Embedded Solutions for our innovative R&D projects in Health, Photonics, Wireless Sensing, and more.
Imec Netherlands has established a world-leading track record in the design of novel sensors for human health applications and ultra-low-power IC designs in general. For instance, our teams continue to develop innovations in implantable therapeutics, medical/wearable devices, environmental monitoring, accurate localization, and many other fields. At our HQ in Leuven, Belgium we are world-renowned for pioneering new process technologies in collaboration with industrial foundries and with the broader semiconductor ecosystem. Imec’s research tracks enable unique opportunities for end-to-end innovations.
We are looking for an ambitious Embedded Software Engineer to contribute to our innovative research projects in multiple technology domains such as Health, Photonics, Wireless Sensing, and Edge AI/Neuromorphic computing. In this role, you get the opportunity to take on responsibility for the full development cycle of designing, implementing, and testing embedded solutions for innovative prototype systems. You will do this in close collaboration with other internal imec groups and external partners. From you, it’s expected to take responsibility for driving the technology/project forward (both to internal and external stakeholders) and embracing improvements of the software development best practices/way of working within the team. You will join the software solutions team in Eindhoven, which consists of ~20 people.
What you will do
We need you as an Embedded Software Engineer to be part of our multidisciplinary team to:
- Design embedded integrated solutions for demonstrators and prototypes based on imec hardware (ASIC) and off-the-shelf sensors, microcontrollers, and radios, while interfacing with external devices.
- Translate project goals into engineering specifications and architectures together with the team, also discussing it with (internal) customers and suppliers.
- Develop and validate your embedded solutions system by implementing, testing, troubleshooting, and debugging.
- Actively contribute (lead) to improvements of software development processes and best practices.
- Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, for instance with Analog/Digital IC Design, Biomedical, Sensors, Photonics, and Edge AI/Neuromorphic Engineers.
What we do for you
By joining imec in Eindhoven, you will be part of a team of disruptive innovators and thinkers. Together, with our Researchers and Engineers, you will work on implants and companions for artificial organs, develop building blocks for autonomous closed-loop health care. In addition to this, your responsibilities will involve collaborating on systems that integrate local data with information sourced from the cloud and various sensor networks. This integration aims to construct a comprehensive overview of the world, fostering an environment conducive to an Intuitive Internet of Things (IoT). Our commitment to driving the Internet of Things is evident in the development of groundbreaking solutions tailored for extensive and diverse sensor networks, connecting billions of devices. Imec stands as a benchmark in designing ultra-low-power electronics, implementing low-power algorithms to enhance intelligence and data security, and excelling in all facets of data science.
Imec The Netherlands, as an employer of choice, offers you an attractive compensation and benefits package including a 100% employer-paid pension plan and flexible working hours. Furthermore, imec-NL offers a wide range of training possibilities. For international candidates, we provide support in the relocation process.
Who you are

- 4-10 years of relevant work experience in embedded software development.
- Excellent hands-on experience in programming languages C and C++ is a must.
- Basic knowledge of Python is a must, advanced experience is a plus.
- Proven (basic) experience and the ability and willingness to grow into embedded software architecture; being able to think ‘big picture’ and design embedded architectures. Envision, initiate, and drive best software development practices across the projects and teams.
- Hands-on and team player; which means (daily) programming, taking initiative, thinking pro-actively, planning and prioritizing work (yours and others), and having a flexible and solving problem attitude are attributes that define yourself.
- Affinity with hardware (ASIC); being able to understand hardware schematics and use electronic lab equipment (scope, logic analyzer, etc.).
- Experience in use/programming with RTOS (Zephyr, FreeRTOS, Azure RTOS, embedded Linux) on ARM-based microcontrollers (Cortex-M or similar) is a plus.
- You see changes as an opportunity to learn and grow and you can deal with ambiguity.
