Medtech Electrical Engineer – Mixed Signal
About the Job
In this role you will work with a growing engineering team to design and implement wireless power transfer and communications circuits for an implantable medical device system. Motif’s technology stack consists of a small implant that is wirelessly powered via magnetic fields from an external wearable transmitter. This role will design and implement power electronics for driving coils to generate magnetic fields, coils for reception of backscatter-like signals from the implant, and a signal processing chain for this channel enabling robust communications in a variety of environments.
Motif is a startup, so this role will allow contributions across domains and gain experience on all elements of early stage medical device design. We are looking for a candidate who is a systems thinker, ideally with experience in shipping robust medical products compliant with all necessary electromagnetic standards.
Job Location: Houston, TX
What is Motif?
Motif is a medical device startup based in Houston, Texas. We are designing and developing minimally invasive electronic solutions for serious mental health conditions. Powered by our patent-pending methods for wireless power and data transmission, our goal is to create the smallest implantable brain stimulator and deliver therapies to patients by 2025.
We are an early-stage startup with funding from venture capital firms, grants, and private angel and founder investments.
Where are we going, and how can you help?
We are currently completing the development of our first minimally invasive neural stimulation system and preparing for future versions with additional functionality based on our platform technology.
We are looking for an Electrical Engineer for our Houston-based operations to design and implement circuits for wireless power transmission and communications. This will include leading the design of drivers for electromagnetic coils and receivers for small backscatter-like signals. The role would also support analysis and understanding of the resulting electromagnetic fields, and would support the characterization and performance of our systems in various electromagnetic environments as needed for standards compliance. This work may include analysis and measurement of the magnetic fields generated by both the transmitting headset and the implant using computation modeling tools in conjunction with bench measurements.
The ideal candidate will have experience in designing analog electronics for medical products, creating high performing electromagnetic power or communications designs, and supporting electromagnetic compatibility of such systems in a variety of environments.
The Right Partner
Motif is being built by highly dedicated people with passion for neurotechnology, clinical product development, and putting the patient first. We are looking for people with the same energy who will thrive in a high growth – high autonomy environment.
Does this sound like you?
- Do you want to create a future where technology enables better mental health care?
- Do you enjoy learning about and driving novel technology?
- Are you on a first name basis with Maxwell and one or more of his equations?
- Do you like testing hypotheses, solving problems, and moving quickly?
- Do you believe that openness and honesty are key to team success?
If yes to the above, then you may love working with Motif.
In this role, you will:
- Partner closely with other team members to design and implement a novel magnetic wireless power transfer subsystem
- Design and implement a robust communication system based on a backscatter-like physical layer (for example, modulation of amplitude or frequency of a ring down element)
- Support design and implementation of power management circuitry for battery powered wearable systems and low power implantable devices
- Lead characterization and testing of both the implant and external parts of the system in appropriate electromagnetic environments, helping to ensure compatibility and performance to critical regulatory standards
- Participate in setting design requirements, verification tests, and performing risk analysis of the system components to support a high quality design output
You Will Need:
- Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or a similar technical degree and at least 6 years of experience
- A strong background in analog design and implementation of systems with a significant electromagnetic component
- Experience working in a regulated environment and delivering high quality and safe-by-design systems
- Experience preparing systems for compliance to regulatory standards such as ISO 14117, ISO 14708, IEC 60601 or other certification standards
- Communication and teamwork skills to work with different engineering disciplines and cross functional collaboration (quality, risk, reliability)
- To be located in the Houston, TX area
It is a bonus if you have:
- Experience in computational modeling of electromagnetic coils or magnetic fields using COMSOL or similar tools
- Experience in designing or optimizing medical telemetry systems, especially those using inductive physical layers
- Aa master’s or other advanced degree
- 10 or more years of experience in industry
Benefits
- Compensation will be a blend of salary and equity that is commensurate with experience
- Participation in our 401k plan
- Health/Medical, Vision, and Dental Insurance
