About the Job

Motif’s technology stack consists of a small implant that is wirelessly powered via magnetic fields from an external wearable transmitter, configured and controlled from a programming interface. It delivers novel stimulation therapy to cortical targets and will evolve to record biomarkers of symptoms, disease state, and therapy response.

 

We are seeking candidates with a late graduate (PhD) or postdoc level of experience and skills in neural recording, neural engineering, integrated circuits, and/or electronic design. What is Motif?

Motif is a medical device startup based in Houston, Texas. We are designing and developing minimally invasive electronic solutions for serious mental health conditions. Powered by our patent-pending methods for wireless power and data transmission, our goal is to create the smallest implantable brain stimulator and deliver therapies to patients by 2025.

We are an early-stage startup with funding from venture capital firms, grants, and private angel and founder investments.

 

Where are we going, and how can you help?

We are currently completing the development of our first minimally invasive neural stimulation system and preparing for future versions with additional functionality based on our platform technology. Included in this roadmap is a capability to record electrophysiological signals useful for optimization and management of cortical stimulation therapy as well biomarkers related to disease symptoms.

Join our cutting-edge research team in an internship focused on the conceptualization of an epidural brain signal recording system. As an intern, you will:

  • Identify and evaluate chipset options for LFP and ECoG recordings on a low-power, miniaturized, low channel count device.
  • Create a proof of concept design and preliminary test reports
  • Demonstrate performance on bench and potentially in preclinical models.

The ideal candidate will understand the landscape of neural sensing hardware appropriate for low power, implantable applications. Experience in designing, characterizing, and deploying such systems in simulation or preclinical environments will be key to success.

In this role, you will:

  • Work closely with the development team to understand design constraints for the miniaturized, low power system
  • Establish key criteria of performance from benchmarks and existing literature
  • Landscape potential solutions, and downselect vs key criteria of performance
  • Source development systems and characterize in simulated use

 

You Will Need:

  • Graduate or post-doc level experience in neural recording systems
  • Knowledge of key properties of neural signals, data acquisition, and simultaneous recording and stimulation
  • Experience collecting and analyzing data sets with MATLAB, Python, R, or other common analysis tools

 

It is a bonus if you have:

  • Experience designing custom neural recording systems
  • Experience in neural signal processing techniques
