Description:

The Research Associate will work with Professor Sheikholeslami, Laboratory Head for the Fujitsu Co-Creation Research Laboratory at the University of Toronto, conducting and facilitating research into hardware annealing for radiotherapy, resource allocation, city traffic, finance, and other applications. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing new-generation hardware annealers, and new associated software for solving optimization problems. The candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary team within the Fujitsu Co-Creation Research Laboratory at the University of Toronto which brings together researchers from electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, financial engineering, statistics, neuroscience, and biomedical engineering. The candidate will carry out a wide variety of technical and non-technical tasks, including interacting closely with industry partners, to enable world-class research in the heart of Canada’s innovation district.

Qualifications:  

  • PhD  in Electrical Engineering with a focus on optimization and hardware design or Master’s degree with strong relevant research experience
  • Published (or submitted for publication) in top-tier IEEE conference(s) and/or journal(s) as a first author
  • Minimum 2 years of experience with hardware and software design for optimization
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in working with the Digital Annealer from Fujitsu
  • In-depth knowledge of FPGA and GPU
  • Ability to work in a team, communicate, and give & receive constructive feedback

Duties

  • Develop new hardware and software designs for optimization problems
  • Train new members of the laboratory
  • Assist in operation of equipment and preparation of technical documentation
  • Assist graduate students and other researchers with technical writing
  • Provide background research for research grant preparation
  • Interface with industry partners, including organizing and running meetings (may involve travel)
  • Assist with preparation of patents and publications
  • Organize the classification and archiving of Intellectual Property within the research team
