Principal Mechanical Engineer
Engineering- Hardware Venice, Los Angeles, CA, USA
JOB SUMMARY:
Kernel is creating the world’s most advanced technologies for interfacing with the human mind. We are looking for a superb Mechanical Engineer to work with our engineers and scientists in translating these technologies from the benchtop to product. The ideal candidate will be involved in all aspects of the mechanical design, from the smallest sensor components, to the outer packaging and industrial design. Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for all aspects of the mechanical design of Kernel products. Interfaces with industrial design consultants, engineering teams, physicists and scientists to translate system requirements into robust and manufactural mechanical components. Interfaces with multi-physics modelers to perform thermal analysis. Is involved in all product phases from discovery to manufacturing to released product.
- Supports multiple projects at varying levels of maturity.
- Maintaining design files and mechanical system requirements.
- Daily, in-depth interactions with industrial design firms, suppliers, contract manufactures, thermal modelers, neurosciences, physicists and Kernel business leaders.
- Can apply good judgement and work independently when necessary as well as communicate why and how design choices and decisions were made.
- Knowledgeable about material choices for components in continuous contact with the human body, rapid prototyping, injection molding. Utilizes best practices in DFM and FMEA.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- 4-year degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent from accredited institution
- Demonstrable proficiency with SolidWorks.
- 3+ years of experience performing mechanical engineering / industrial design for consumer, medical or aerospace.
PREFERRED SKILLS:
- Thermal modeling experience (Comsol)
- Experience designing system components and outer packaging for 3D printing and injection molding (optical quality injection molding a plus)
- Design for manufacturing (DFM) and Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA).
- Experience with soft materials (e.g. silicone) and soft goods manufacturing methods
- Review supplier tool design, process flow, equipment selection, DFM, and DOE proposals to ensure design compliance
- Knowledge of bio-safe and biocompatible materials.
- Experience with making wearable devices.
- Focused on the success of the team and project.
- Great communication skills.
