Lead Optical Engineer
Advanced R&D Venice, Los Angeles, CA, USA
JOB SUMMARY:
Kernel is developing the future of non-invasive Neural Interfaces to enable applications requiring high-fidelity neural data. We are looking for an optical engineer to join our group in developing new tools for neuroscientists to use to more effectively interface with the brain. A successful candidate will have expertise in a variety of optical module designs and a track record of working with manufacturing partners to scale-up production.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Work with systems engineers and neuroscientists to capture optical design constraints and requirements.
- Design lens systems/modules using industry standard software.
- Engage with external partners for prototyping and manufacturing of lenses or other optical elements.
- Validate designs using optical test equipment and standard practices.
- Develop manufacturing tests for custom optical elements and modules.
- Explore integrated optical elements and opportunities for wafer-level manufacturing.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Physics, Optical Engineering, or other relevant field.
- 5+ years experience modeling and designing lens systems using industry standard ray tracing software like Zemax, FRED, CoreV, COMSOL, etc.
- Demonstrated track-record of designing systems for manufacturing and coordinating with suppliers.
- High level proficiency in testing optical components and defining tests for manufacturing.
- Optical module design experience.
- Excellent documentation and communication skills.
PREFERRED SKILLS:
- Experience with wafer-level processing techniques.
- Design and modeling of wafer-level integrated optical components like color filters, anti-reflective coatings, and micro-lenses.
- Experience with a range of optical sources (VCSELs, Laser Diodes, etc.) and detectors (APDs, SiPMs, PIN PDs, etc.)
