Summary
The Neurodegeneration & Repair Research Unit at Biogen is seeking an independent and highly motivated Associate Scientist to join the Neuromuscular and Movement Disorders group. The group is responsible for the discovery and validation of pathogenic mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases and for translating these findings into novel therapeutic interventions.

Job Description
The successful candidate will have hands-on experience in a variety of in vitro and in vivo models relevant for neurodegenerative diseases and the ability to utilize these models for target validation, mechanism of action studies and support for drug discovery projects. The position requires expertise in state-of-the-art molecular, biochemical and cell biological techniques including primary cell culture. Experience with cellular assay development and/or animal handling is preferred.
The selected individual is expected to carefully plan and execute experiments in consultation with the supervisor including the analysis and interpretation of the experimental results to achieve agreed upon objectives. They will have the opportunity to work in cross-functional teams and collaborate with others as necessary. The individual is expected to clearly communicate their results and accomplishments to a broad audience at team meetings and in written reports.
Qualifications
• A basic knowledge of concepts of neurodegenerative diseases and mechanisms.
• A solid understanding of experimental design, underlying scientific principles, and the ability to rigorously analyze and document results.
• Must be adept at following protocols and should have the scientific experience to modify/troubleshoot it when necessary.
• Experience with multiple cell/tissue culture systems, including microdissection and primary neuronal cultures generation.
• Experience with cell-based assays as well as familiarity with microscopy systems.
• Experience with molecular biology techniques such as RNA isolation, qPCR, ELISA, gel electrophoresis, Western blots etc.
• Experience with small laboratory animal handling and surgery, tissue harvesting, immunostaining and biochemical analyses.
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, ability to clearly communicate results and to maintain detailed written records.
Education
BS/MS in Biological sciences. BS + 4 -7 years or MS + 2-5 years relevant experience in neurobiology and/or in the pharmaceutical industry.
