Associate Researcher

About the Job

An Associate Researcher position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Hala Harony-Nicolas in the Seaver Autism Center for Research and Treatment at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) in New York.

Dr. Harony-Nicolas’s lab investigates neural and molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of ASD, with a particular focus on (1) studying the effect of ASD-associated mutations on brain systems and neural circuits of social behavior that may contribute to deficits in social behavior with the aim to identify targets for intervention, (2) assessing the effect of novel or FDA approved therapeutics using behavioral and electrophysiological outcome measures, and (3) improving drug delivery to the brain using cutting edge technologies. Dr. Harony-Nicolas’s lab uses transgenic ASD rat models and applies behavioral and molecular neuroscience approaches, genome wide transcriptional analysis, and chemo-genetic tools to dissect molecular pathways and neural circuits affected in ASD.

The Associate Researcher is an entry laboratory research position. Under moderate supervision by the PI and/or a senior researcher in the lab, the Associate Researcher will be responsible for rodent behavior experiments, rodent brain surgery, and for carrying out routine and standardized molecular experiments using techniques specific to the research projects. S/he will analyze experiment data and assist in interpreting moderately complex results and will typically conduct laboratory research. The position may also include lab and clerical support.

Specific responsibilities include

    • Conducts routine and standardized experiments using appropriate research techniques specific to subject matter of the research project. This includes taking a major role on projects that involve rodent behavioral testing as well as blood draw, perfusion and brain surgery in rodents.
    • Analyzes and assists in interpreting laboratory results of moderate complexity.
    • Maintains laboratory environment and assists in the upkeep of appropriate inventory; may include ordering of supplies.
    • Assists in the collection, analysis and review of experimental data for publication and presentation.
