Job Description

The Camera Culture group at the MIT Media Lab focuses on making the invisible visible—inside our bodies, around us, and beyond—for health, work, and connection. The group aims to create an entirely new class of imaging platforms that have an understanding of the world that far exceeds human ability and produce meaningful abstractions that are well within human comprehensibility.

We are looking for a postdoctoral associate to join a highly collaborative team of faculty and researchers focusing on computational imaging, including ultrafast imaging systems, single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) detectors, THz time domain spectroscopy, and novel sensing systems.

The right individual is highly motivated and self-directed with excellent research skills who can work independently and contribute as part of a very broad multidisciplinary team, possessing experience with optics and as many of the following as possible: MATLAB, Python, Labview, Zmax, and FDTD softwares.

Responsibilities

• • Performing independent research in areas including computational imaging, medical imaging, non-line-of-sight imaging, and 3D imaging modalities (e.g., tomography)
  • Publishing, presenting, and disseminating research to the optics and computer vision communities
  • Collaborating with professors from other institutions in their research
  • Working with private, industry, and/or government research sponsors to apply for research grants
  • Helping to identify projects, mentor graduate students, and supplement a team of researchers to push forward this research
  • Other duties as assigned.

The postdoctoral associate will devote about 40% time to research, 30% to grants and industry links, and 30% to lab collaborations. This role offers an opportunity to do state-of-the-art research while developing teaching skills for faculty positions; to be part of the vibrant research community at MIT and the Media Lab, and to attend OSA, IEEE, and other conferences.

This is a one-year appointment with the possibility of extension based on the direction of the research and funding.

Qualifications

REQUIRED:

PhD in optics or photonics (ECE) or closely related fields
Experience with experimental optics, ultrafast systems, and optical sources and sensors
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proactive approach to problem solving and time management
Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills
Ability to incubate and envision new, innovative research projects and successfully manage their implementation with graduate students
Background or demonstrated experience in computational imaging algorithms (signal processing, machine learning, and optimization)
Interest in current research activities of the Camera Culture group
