07 Mar Master Internship – EEG Noise Correction
Real-time EEG artifact management
Company
Open Mind Neurotechnologies (Open Mind) is a 3-year old French neurotechnology startup dedicated to wellness and healthcare applications of virtual reality (VR) and quantitative neurophysiology for the general public. Its first B2C service offers a 360-degree assessment of individual mental wellbeing. It uses a combination of psychometric questionnaires with physiological and behavioral measurements taken during an immersive experience in VR to quantify several dimensions of mental health in a dynamical approach. Open Mind employs a multidisciplinary team of 20 people including 5 PhDs. The scientific team includes data scientists, experimental researchers and psychologists, as well as software engineers. The creative studio team includes game developers and programmers specialized in VR as well as graphic and sound designers. Through partnerships with clinical and academic institutions in applied research and product development, Open Mind aims at transforming the mental health framework by creating new avenues, within and beyond healthcare, to maximize the duration of a healthy, functional and meaningful living.
Work objectives
Implement real-time data visualization widgets for signals and derived data obtained during acquisition protocols.
Description
Open Mind consumer services are based on the collection and analysis of multimodal biometric data using research level measurement tools. One of these modalities is electroencephalography (EEG), a non-invasive measure of the electrical activity of the brain. Due to the low signal-to-noise ratio of this signal, biological or external artifacts are detected in addition to the brain activity of interest. For this reason, any serious application using EEG must have a clear artifact management strategy. This artifact management is crucial for real-time EEG applications, such as brain-computer interface (BCI) applications. Fortunately, the BCI literature presents a variety of algorithms that can be implemented to detect and correct artifacts. During this internship, the candidate will implement and test artifact correction strategies based on source separation (e.g. independent component analysis, approximate joint diagonalization of cospectra) and other methods. These algorithms will be implemented on the frameworks used by Open Mind, which includes an open-source framework for real-time processing of biosignals (Timeflux, https://timeflux.io). The results of this internship will be used directly for BCI/EEG applications by Open Mind and many offline analyses of the data science and engineering teams.
