PhD – Neurobiological Bases of Human Intelligence

The Department of Psychology I (led by Prof. Dr. Paul Pauli) at Julius Maximilian University Würzburg is offering a PhD position in a project about the neurobiological bases of human intelligence funded by the DFG (German Research Foundation). The initial duration is 18 months, but a prolongation is planned. The position starts as soon as possible.

Within the project, we will apply modern techniques from Network Neuroscience to fMRI data of large sample sets to gain new insights into the biological implementation of individual differences in intelligence within the human brain. A special focus will be on the relation between general intelligence and controlled attention.

Applicants should have a master’s degree in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, data science, physics or related disciplines. Further, they should be interested in neurobiological sciences and respective methods. Experience with data management and computer programming skills (Matlab, Unix, Python) are advantageous.

Initial experience with/general interest in the following subjects is desirable:
  • Management and analyses of fMRI data
  • Network Neuroscience methods, connectivity analyses, graph theory
  • Cross-validated prediction-based approaches, Machine Learning
  • Reproducibility, Open Science

The Department of Psychology in Würzburg offers an outstanding research environment and excellent working conditions. We offer modern and well-equipped workstations as well as the opportunity to conduct data analyses on large computing clusters. Visits of national and international conferences and workshops are encouraged. For supervision and mentoring of the PhD candidate and the project as a whole an interdisciplinary team of national and international experts is available.
