PhD – Cognitive Psychology

I am seeking students who are interested in investigating memory and attention. Successful candidates will be involved in a number of projects, depending on their research interests, and will also be encouraged to develop independent projects. I would appreciate it if you can share this e-mail with students who may be interested or on listservs for MA students.

 

PhD positions will be at the Psychology Department, Sabancı University, Istanbul (https://www.sabanciuniv.edu/en/) under the supervision of Dr. Eren Günseli (https://www.gunselilab.com/), funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK). Projects aim to investigate the interactions between working memory and long-term memory using EEG. The positions will start in Fall 2020, though other start dates can be negotiated. The psychology group at Sabancı University, Istanbul, is currently expanding and starting a new graduate program. There will be multiple EEG facilities and eye trackers on site. At later stages of the projects, collaborations using fMRI may be possible.

 

Requirements:

  • Applicants should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, computational neuroscience, statistics, computer science, or a related field

Note: Applicants graduating from a Bachelor’s program should feel free to get in touch, as additional positions for a MA+PhD combined program is possible.

  • Strong skills in research methodology and statistics, demonstration of critical thinking abilities, and strong verbal and written communication skills in English are essential
  • Experience with EEG and strong programming/computational skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python) are desirable but not required
  • Speaking Turkish is *not* required

 

Responsibilities of PhD students will involve the following:

  • Designing and programming experiments (behavioral and EEG)
  • Collecting and analyzing data (event-related potentials, time-frequency power, forward encoding models)
  • Preparing manuscripts for publication and presenting findings at national and international conferences
  • Possible supervision of research assistants
