International Brain Laboratory Company Logo New York NY, USA

User Experience Officer (UEO)

The International Brain Laboratory has openings for postdoctoral fellows and scientific staff who will play key roles in a new large-scale international collaboration in brain research.

The IBL combines the efforts of approximately 50 scientists in 22 laboratories toward understanding the brain-wide basis of a complex behavior.

The project will involve recording the activity of millions of neurons in the working brain and building mathematical models of the resulting data. The data sets this project will produce are vast and complex, including physiological recordings, behavioural measurements, and video, all of which must be standardized into common formats, integrated into a single database, and subjected to quality control. Core staff positions will support the both experimental and theoretical work through the entire data life cycle, including acquisition, analysis, modeling and dissemination.

Remuneration will be competitive and commensurate with experience. There is considerable flexibility in base location within the U.S. and Europe.

You can find more specific information about the different job openings below.

USER EXPERIENCE OFFICER (UEO)

The scientific infrastructure we build will be useful for projects beyond the IBL itself. The UEO will ensure this infrastructure is easily usable not just by IBL scientists, but by the worldwide community. Our data will be accessible to the public via web interface and via an API: the UEO will be responsible for the design of these interfaces, ensuring that they are easily usable by scientists who are not familiar with the project’s internal workings. Our software infrastructure — our database and systems for organizing, uploading and storing data — can be used by other scientific projects, and are developed as open source. The UEO will ensure these systems can be easily installed and used by outside scientists.

The ideal candidate would have extensive experience with the design of public-facing web sites, and with Python and software packaging systems (eg Anaconda): the job involves optimizing user experience not only on the website, but also with installing and running the API. This job will involve liaison with users in the external neuroscientific community, so some prior experience working with neuroscientists could be beneficial. As this is a distributed collaboration, the candidate should be prepared to travel to all partner sites, with a home base ideally in Lisbon, but also possibly London or New York.
