04 Apr PhD – Development of Brain Circuits
Queensland Brain Institute
The Queensland Brain Institute (QBI), established in 2003 under the leadership of Founding Director Professor Perry Bartlett, has developed a reputation as one of the world’s leading neuroscience research institutes. Part of the University of Queensland, the Institute is home to over 450 scientific staff led by 41 Group Leaders.
The importance of QBI’s research is demonstrated through publications in the most prestigious international journals and a very high success rate in NHMRC and ARC grants.
About this Project
This project will investigate how circuits form that are involved in the development of spontaneous and sensory-evoked activity in the cerebral cortex of small mammals. By combining chemo- and opto-genetics, with molecular neurobiology and advanced microscopy, this project will pioneer new ways to investigate early formation of brain circuits and provide unprecedented knowledge of the mechanisms that regulate brain wiring.
Eligibility
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following: molecular biology and/or brain development, confocal microscopy, or electrophysiology Please detail this experience in your application. Completion of BSc with Honours or Masters of Philosophy is required.
It will be advantageous to the applicant if you have completed undergraduate courses in either Neurophysiology/Cell Physiology/Biophysics, Developmental Biology/Neurobiology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Zoology/Genetics/Evolution or Mathematical Neuroscience.
Applicants must also fulfil the PhD admission criteria for the University of Queensland, including English language requirements, and demonstrate excellent capacity and potential for research. Demonstration of research ability through publication output in peer reviewed international journals is desirable.
Scholarship Value
Competitive scholarships are available for national and international candidates of high standing (e.g. Australia Awards, Graduate School Scholarships, Thornton Foundation, amongst others), please see UQ Graduate School webpage for further details and applications. Note that some scholarships have tight application deadlines (e.g. next round closes in March with outcomes announced in June).
