Research Assistant (60%) – Architectural Modelling with BCI

The newly created Neuramod multidisciplinary research group, and hosted at the Chair of Digital Architectonics (CAAD) at the Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA) ETH Zürich is searching for a Research Assistant (60% – 1 year – renewable), starting October 2020.

Within the double scope of a use-inspired and basic research project funded by the Swiss National Foundation (SNF) for the period 2020-2024, the group will be actively researching on new architectural modelling technologies.

The project aims at assessing a novel approach involving both human and artificial intelligences to decode and encode meaningful architectonic articulations from generated visuo-semantic tokens and neural responses as a next generation of grammar-less modelling methods, and based on information-communication technology and cognitive science paradigms. By the use of multimodal, gaze-dependent, brain-computer Interfaces, it will progressively elaborate a technical infrastructure to allow for producing and evaluating visuo-spatial and physical experiments, and to finally reflect upon a synthetic and theoretical framework.

Immersed into the dynamic and versatile institute, this position can be particularly suited for prospective PhD students who are looking for gaining a competitive experience while getting acquainted with a demanding and emulating research environment. The open position is primarily oriented for, but not limited to, graduates in architecture and/or engineering with profile and skills oriented towards technology for architectural design. Graduates in cognitive science and information technologies with an interest in architecture are also most welcome. The role of this person will be to ensure the fluency of the project workflow through weekly tasks of hardware and software developments supervised directly by the project leader and in coordination with the entire research team across several european research institutions. Prior experience in team work and collaborative projects is thus mandatory, but not necessarily in scientific contexts (e.g., professional and/or academic experience post-graduate). Professional written and spoken proficiency in English is mandatory, and German considered an optional asset.

The candidate must have proven tracks of experience in several of the following:

  • programming (Python)
  • physiological data acquisition and processing
  • full stack web and mobile development,
  • graphic communication skills in both picture and video formats
  • CAD/CAM APIs
  • physical prototyping of architectural design mockups
  • machine learning
  • mediated reality integrations
  • academic writing and literature research
  • experiment design and methods.

The required documents to submit for consideration consist of: a project portfolio, a CV, and a letter of intent explaining prior experiences, motivations to apply and expectations. All three documents can be freely organised by the applicant to best fit the position, and provided in .Pdf format. They should be made available, through a downloadable link without expiration date. Please send the link, along with the names and emails of 2 referees available to contact for personal feedback, to Pierre Cutellic at cutellic@arch.ethz.ch with the subject “Neuramod – Research Assistant Application” by June, 26th 2020 11pm GMT.

Selections and remote interviews will be ran before a final decision is reached by the end of July. Please note that any missing information from the emailed submission might not be considered, and questions will not be answered during the applications reception period.
