30 Apr PostDoc – Project Focusing on Aging Using fMRI and Neuropsychological Assessment
The Proaction Laboratory (Perception and Recognition of Objects and Actions; http://gaius.fpce.uc.pt/pessoais/jorgealmeida/proaction_home.html; Jorge Almeida’s Lab) and the PsyAssessment Lab (http://psyassessmentlab.fpce.uc.pt/equipa/membros-atuais; Mario Simões’s Lab) at the University of Coimbra (www.uc.pt), Portugal, are looking for a motivated and bright Post-doctoral researcher to investigate aspects of cognitive and neural aging. The project involves testing healthy elderly individuals using fMRI and a series of general cognitive assessment batteries and process-specific (e.g., episodic memory, semantic memory, attention and executive functioning) batteries. This position is funded by the Portuguese Science Foundation. The researcher will work directly with Jorge Almeida and Mário Simões and members of their labs in Coimbra.
Required Qualifications:
- Applicants should have a PhD degree in psychology, neuroscience, neuropsychological assessment, computer science, biomedical engineering, or a related discipline.
- Applicants are expected to have a very strong research background in the design and analysis of functional brain-imaging experiments (fMRI) and neuropsychological assessment.
- Experience with fMRI analyses programs (e.g., SPM, FSL, MrVISTA, Freesurfer, Brainvoyager), and with analysis of neuropsychological data (e.g., ROC curves) are a must.
- Good understanding and command of analytical techniques used in fMRI – in particular multivariate approaches on functional data, DTI, Structural analysis.
- Programming skills (MATLAB, Python) are important.
- Good English (oral and written) communicative skills are necessary.
- This post will require designing experiments, collecting and analyzing data associated with the project, preparing manuscripts for publication, presenting results at national and international conferences and the possible supervision of research assistants and students.
Individuals whose doctoral degrees were obtained outside of Portugal will have to get their degree certified in Portugal. Individuals with PhDs obtained in European Union States will be able to do this certification automatically. Certain countries have bilateral agreements with Portugal on automatic certification of their degrees.
The Position:
The position is for 3 years to 3 years and a half, and may start 2020 (or even early 2021; start date can be negotiated a little bit). The salary is competitive for the cost of living in Portugal (and particularly in Coimbra), and follows the Portuguese Post-Doctoral rates.
The labs:
At both labs we have access to a 3T MRI scanner with a 64-channel coil (with EEG inside the scanner), to tDCS with neuronavigation, to a 256 ch. EEG, to an eyetracker, and to a fully set assessment library and lab. Finally, the University of Coimbra is a 700 year old University and has been selected as a UNESCO world Heritage site. Coimbra is one of the most lively university cities in the world, and it is a beautiful city with easy access to the beach and mountain.
