PostDoc- Registering Fully Reconstructed Neurons to Brain Atlases

Postdoc position Neuroinformatics at Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands

This project ‘NeuronsReunited’ is about real, physical connections at the most detailed level, where long-range axons that reach across the brain target specific neurons in multiple brain areas/layers. Reliable techniques to fully reconstruct such axons have only recently become available. Our experimental partner (Clasca, Madrid) has been pioneering with this and his lab is tracing neurons one by one at a high level of precision. Several large projects are underway to map much larger numbers of neurons (MouseLight, Allen Brain Cell Types), and the goal of this project is to asses the precision of those large scale projects by comparison with the “gold standard’ neurons used in this project.

Deliverables of the project include tools for speeding up the conversion of experimental data into digital axons, and to precisely place neurons into a digital reference brain to reveal their context. They are applied to existing and new data in mouse, and the resulting insights are incorporated into new models for brain function.

The project is a collaboration between five international partners, two experimental partners (Prof. Francisco Clasca, Madrid; Prof. Egidio d’Angelo, Pavia) and three computational/theoretical partners (Prof. Paul Tiesinga, Dr. Rembrandt Bakker, Nijmegen; Prof. Michele Giugliano, Trieste; Prof. Sacha Van Albada, Jülich).
