07 Jun Research Chair of Hardware Development for Quantum and Neuromorphic Computing
As part of the call for proposals for a MEI / UdeS Research Chair, the Faculty of Engineering of The Université de Sherbrooke is seeking candidates to fill a professorship in the field of hardware development for quantum and neuromorphic computing. This is a regular full-time position. The recruited person will be attached to the department that best matches their profile.
This research Chair is supported by the ministère de l’Économie et de l’Innovation du Gouvernement du Québec. It is part of the Government strategy, described in the Québec 2019-2020 budget and aims to promote technologies supporting Artificial intelligence, allowing Université de Sherbrooke to recruit the best world-class researchers in this field. This chair will benefit from an annual funding of $200,000, for 5 years.
For several years, the Faculty of Engineering of Université de Sherbrook and its Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering occupy an enviable position in the fields of training and applied research by providing a friendly and collaborative environment, where discovery and initiative are strongly favored. In addition, the Faculty favors a rigorous and complete training of its students and it is recognized for its work-study coop program.
UNIVERSITY’S COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION
The University is committed to making a priority of these values as strategic factors of excellence.
This commitment is stated in the University’s Plan d’action d’équité pour les programmes interorganismes (2017–2022).
The University invites all qualified individuals to apply, in particular, women, members of visible and ethnic minorities, aboriginal people, and persons with disabilities under the Programme d’accès à l’égalité en emploi (PAEE). Moreover, the selection tools can be adapted, with an assurance of complete confidentiality, to the needs of persons with disabilities who so request. The University also encourages individuals of all sexual orientations and gender identities to apply. Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
REGARDING THE FACULTY OF ENGINEERING

In addition, the Faculty favors a rigorous and complete training of its students and it is recognized for its work-study coop program.
The Faculty of Engineering distinguishes itself from other Canadian universities in terms of technology transfer and its impact on society. It is
relying on many interdisciplinary initiatives and emerging fields of research to further its long-term growth.
REQUIRED PROFILE
The expertise of the candidates must be linked mainly to the field of this Chair and in particular to the research and development of integrated hardware solutions dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing requiring control electronic operating at very low temperatures. The main challenges are related to the development of electronics allowing efficient qubits control, notably by reducing the number of interconnects within the limited thermal budget. In addition, efficient implementation of AI algorithms requires dedicated hardware designs. Expertise in this area will improve the energy efficiency of proposed solutions.
Applicants must propose a promising and innovative research program of the highest quality allowing the transfer of knowledge while demonstrating interest and competency in teaching.
The successful candidate will be selected by a selection committee according to the following criteria:
- Expertise and experience in the field.
- The scientific relevance of the proposal
- The structuring impact of the proposal with regard to economic spinoffs in Quebec and research themes
- in quantum engineering and development of AI hardware solutions.
- The suitability of the application based on the orientations of the Faculty of Engineering and the Université de Sherbrooke.
- With regard to the pool of potential candidates, the contribution to achieving institutional targets in terms of diversity and equity.
CAREER BREAKS
In accordance with the objectives of equity and diversity, career interruptions due to parental, medical or family leave will be taken into
account when evaluating applications. Applicants are therefore encouraged to identify these periods in their curriculum vitae or cover letter.
