Job Summary:

The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) Care Research & Technology (CR&T) Centre at Imperial College London is seeking outstanding and committed post-doctoral research associates to work within neuroscience and/or machine learning. In this role you will become a key member of the research staff in the groups of David Sharp (Centre Director) and Payam Barnaghi (Deputy Director).

You will join a vibrant community within the CR&T, which brings together engineering, data science, psychology and medicine to develop technologies that have a direct impact on the lives of people affected by dementia. The Centre has a broad research portfolio focusing on the development and application of new approaches to the diagnosis, monitoring and care needs of people affected by dementia. We are developing new approaches to home monitoring, point-of-care diagnostics, and behavioural / cognitive assessment. Machine learning is being used to help understand disease progression and provide novel approaches to dementia care. We are integrating innovative biomarkers and neuroimaging into patient assessment and will be conducting clinical trials technology applied to dementia care.

The UK DRI was established with ~£300 million funding to tackle the challenges of dementia. Founding funders were the Medical Research Council (UK) and charity partners the Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK. The CR&T was established in 2019 as the 7th Centre within UK DRI. The centre brings together engineering, science and medicine to develop technologies that have a direct impact on the treatment and quality of life of people who suffer from age-related neurological disorders. The Centre is currently focused on the short and long-term effects of COVID-19. Our work on remote assessment and support for patients affected by dementia is particularly relevant at the current time and you will have the opportunity to contribute to this critically important research area.

 

Key responsibilities and duties
Areas of research focus include the development of:

  • New behavioural measures for dementia assessment.
  • EEG and neuroimaging measures that characterise brain dysfunction produced by dementia.
  • New interventions to enhance cognitive function, assist quality of life and reduce the impact disease.
  • Novel approaches to machine learning applied to real-world data relevant to dementia care.
  • Responses to the COVID-19 crisis that minimise the short and long-term effects of COVID-19

 

Essential Requirements:
We’re looking for creative and enthusiastic researchers who can take on challenging roles with considerable scope for independent scientific achievement and personal growth. You will play a central role in developing the neuroscientific and/or machine learning work within the CR&T. This post will suit you if you are highly motivated and interested in addressing real-world challenges and creating end-to-end solutions for problems encountered by those affected by dementia. There are several posts available that would be suitable for applicants with a range of neuroscience and machine learning skills.

 

Further Information:

There are 4 posts available, offered on a full time, fixed term basis for 3 years in the first instance.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477 – £38,566 per annum.
