JOB DESCRIPTION:

Our Neuromodulation business is an area of expertise for Abbott. This business includes implantable devices compatible with mobile technology to help people who suffer from chronic pain and movement disorders. Our Solutions include Proclaim (TM) XR SCS System, the #1 Spinal cord stimulator on the market, Proclaim (TM) DRG Neurostimulator, the only FDA approved DRG therapy and a market leader in radiofrequency ablation therapy, Abbott RFA.  These non-opioid therapies allow us to provide interventional pain therapy to patients throughout the pain continuum. Our deep brain stimulation technology for progressive diseases help people manage their Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor symptoms, steering away from side effects.

Our location in Plano, TX currently has an opportunity for a Senior Research Scientist. The Senior Research Scientist will provide scientific and clinical expertise for development and execution of preclinical and clinical feasibility studies related to neuromodulation therapies for treating chronic pain and movement disorders. Additionally, the scientist will plan, complete, and support technical and scientific programs leading to innovative applications of new and existing products and technologies. The scientist will also disseminate findings and product implications to management, engineers/scientists, and when appropriate, the scientific and medical community through publications, conferences, reports, and presentations. He/she will investigate the patent implications of research outcomes and coordinate applications with Abbott’s intellectual property attorneys.

 

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Design, plan, and carry out preclinical and clinical feasibility studies in spinal cord stimulation, dorsal root ganglion stimulation and deep brain stimulation for treatment of chronic pain and movement disorders
  • Generation of study-related documents, which may include, but are not limited to, study protocols, informed consent and case report forms
  • Serve as an active member of study teams and provide scientific support to justify trial design and ongoing scientific analysis during protocol development. May include generation of pre-protocol documentation of scientific information
  • Perform extensive analysis of data using statistical methods
  • Report significant progress and final findings of projects to management and product development staff in the company
  • Publish research findings in scientific press and may otherwise disseminate findings at conferences and symposia
  • Remain aware of patent implications of research; takes appropriate steps to review patent implications with attorneys and with management; prepares documentation for patent applications whenever required to protect value to the company
  • With approvals, may collaborate with and/or direct research projects carried out at universities and laboratories outside the company
  • Assess own and others’ research results in order to develop recommendations for future research directions and projects

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING

  • Required
    • Associates degree and minimum 4 years of related work experience.
    • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
    • This position also requires strong leadership skills as it will require significant interaction with executive leadership, physicians and regulatory authorities.
  • Preferred
    • PhD in neuroscience or biomedical engineering strongly preferred
    • Medical device experience preferred.
