Job description
Department
The University of Essex is gold rated in the Teaching Excellence Framework 2017 and we’re in the top 25 for research quality in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide. We’re committed to excellence in research for the benefit of individuals, communities, and the industry, and we provide extensive open access to our research repository.
The Essex Artificial Intelligence Innovation Centre brings together the research skills, expertise and technologies across our Faculty of Humanities, Science and Health, and Social Sciences to address the grand challenges facing citizens, workers, and all those technologists in sectors undergoing the digital transformation to create new – or modify existing – business processes, culture, and customer experiences to meet changing business and market requirements.
We have the ambition of developing a sustainable funding model for our research fit for the rigours of the emerging UK research environment. We reach beyond the confines of academia as we have a clear mandate to work with business partners in the UK and overseas. We’re different because we bring a commercial mind-set to our work. We start with and are responsive to business needs. We work hard to make sure they are getting the outputs they need, when they need them. We’re not bound by tradition and offer fresh perspective and innovation in all we do.
Duties of the Role
Recently, we secured funding from Innovate UK for the project titled: Brain Computer Interface driven rehabilitation of upper limb weakness of stroke survivors (Neurestore, project number 106293). As part of this 3-year project we are looking to recruit two Research Officers that will work along with our Investigators to develop a non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) approach to exploit electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns, triggering feedback or an action output from an exoskeleton for stroke survivors who suffer upper limb impairment. To deliver these research objectives, the Research Officers will be supervised by the Principal Investigator, Dr Panos Chatzakos, and the Co-Investigators, Dr Anirban Chowdhury, and Dr Andrew Bateman, of the research project.
These are full-time, fixed-term posts until 31 October 2022.
Skills and qualifications required
The postholder will hold a BSc in Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience and have experience with multi-channel data acquisition systems and working with large and complex datasets. Additionally, they will possess programming skills in MATLAB, C and Python and have working experience with microcontrollers such as Arduino/Raspberry Pi as well as app development experience with Android studio, C#, Kotin, etc.
At the University of Essex, internationalism and diversity is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries, faiths and backgrounds, where you can find the world in one place.
To support this commitment we have our Global Forum, a staff-led network that promotes and celebrates the rich cultural diversity among Essex staff, and our Colchester campus based Faith Centre, which hosts regular services, meetings and events organised by our chaplains and faith representatives.
