Technical Program Manager – Neuromotor interactions

Technical Program Manager

Program Management ·  New York, NY ·  Fulltime

Facebook Reality Labs is seeking a Technical Program Manager to help us unleash human potential by eliminating the bottlenecks between intent and action. To achieve this, we’re building a practical neural interface drawing on the rich motor neuron signals that can be measured non-invasively with neuron-level resolution. Our research lies at the intersection of computational neuroscience, machine learning, signal processing, statistics, biophysics, motor learning, perceptual psychophysics, and human-computer interaction. We’re looking for people who want to shape the future of this technology and are excited about joining our collaborative team that has grown out of the acquisition of CTRL-labs. We are specifically looking for a candidate with experience in managing data collection operations for a fast-moving technology or research team and who can support a team that is working on the next era of human-computer interaction. The chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will manage research study pipelines across multiple teams.

Technical Program Manager Responsibilities

  • Manage procurement, hardware selection and testing, and liaising with suppliers to coordinate distribution of equipment. Ensure secure return of equipment with security and operations personnel.
  • Establish processes to formalize new programs, while scaling across teams and supporting the program in day-to-day operations.
  • Establish and manage a scheduling system to plan multiple concurrent research studies across 3 programs to enable the successful scientific execution of research while upholding deadlines.
  • Own staffing and budget management for a large third-party research team, including working with hiring managers to develop contractor staffing plans and best practices that build cross-functional operational partnerships to support the team’s research.
  • Proactively identify potential setbacks to research efforts and develop mitigation plans, communicate status, risks and mitigations to stakeholders and partners. Understand tradeoffs of various solutions and approaches such that you are able to spot new, less obvious solutions during planning, and choose the best solution for your programs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience as an operations manager, project manager, or business manager at a technology company, research institution, or similar organization.
  • 2+ years of experience in people management or vendor management.
  • A track record of planning, executing, and delivering results for complex and cross-functional technical projects.
  • Experience making quick and effective decisions that affect a team while navigating policy, legal, business, and logistics constraints.
  • Interpersonal and inter-team skills, including partnership building, mentorship, and conflict resolution within a diverse, cross-functional team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of people management experience, especially managing Research Assistants in a high-volume data collection environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a hard science field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2+ years of experience managing programs or operations at a technology startup or research lab.
  • 2+ years experience in managing or technical leadership at a large technology company.
