PhD – Improving Deep Brain Stimulation Through Artificial Intelligence

Project Title: Improving deep brain stimulation through artificial intelligence

We are looking for a PhD student to join our research project Improving deep brain stimulation through artificial intelligence. In this project, you will collect data from patients using simultaneous MEG and intracranial recordings. In addition, we will obtain kinematic data and anatomical images of the brain using MRI. Besides neuroscientific measurements, data science plays an important role. The project involves the creation of a scientific database and sophisticated data analysis, using dedicated software tools for MEG/MRI and the implementation and application of machine learning algorithms.

The doctoral researcher will conduct neuroscientific experiments, analyze and present the data, and prepare publications under supervision, resulting in a PhD thesis.

Requirements

  • Master of Science in the natural sciences, computer science or psychology Intrinsic motivation and a passion for brain research
  • First experience in programming and scientific data analysis (mandatory)
  • First experience in at least two of the following: M/EEG, machine learning/AI, local field potential recordings, motion tracking, MRI, scientific databases

The project is supported by a five-year grant of the Brunhilde Moll Foundation to Prof. Alfons Schnitzler and Dr. Jan Hirschmann. We offer fixed-term contracts for three years initially, with the possibility of prolongation. Payment accords to the for the German public sector (Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst der Länder).

The applications should include a statement of research interests and reasons for applying to the project, a curriculum vitae including a list publications, a certificate of the Master’s degree, a copy of the master’s thesis and grades of Master’s level studies, and the names and e-mail addresses of two referees. Please address questions and send applications (pdf only!) to Jan.Hirschmann at med.uni-duesseldorf.de
