About This Role:
Biogen is accelerating gene therapies that may one day help transform the way we treat neurological diseases. Our Gene Therapy Process and Technology Development Department is searching for a leader to be the Head of Gene Therapy, Purification Process Development. This role will be responsible for steering the strategic vision and direction for purification process and technology development to support Biogen’s portfolio of Adeno-associated virus-based (AAV) gene therapy products. This role reports into the Head of Gene Therapy Process & Technology Development.
What You’ll Do:
- Provide strategic direction for Gene Therapy purification process and technology development.
- Direct a highly trained staff to develop robust clinical/commercial purification processes and control strategies, and support technology transfer to CMOs.
- Manage the purification team, which includes resource planning, staff development, and performance management.
- Direct internal efforts to establish, improve and implement purification technology.
- Direct technology projects with external collaborators to evaluate and implement innovative purification technologies.

Qualifications:
Education:
- Ph.D. with 10+ years’ experience, or B.S/M.S. with 15+ years’ experience in the biotech / biopharma industry
- Bioengineering, Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or related discipline preferred
- Other relevant expertise in Science or Engineering will be considered
Required Skills:
- Deep expertise in the purification of biological products and purification process development
- Ability to provide direction, guidance and mentoring to a team of scientists/engineers
- Experience in the validation of DS/DP processes
- Demonstrated ability to develop innovative purification technologies / approaches
- Experience with the transferring purification processes to CMOs
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and ability to plan and administer a project to ensure timely completion
Preferred Skills:
- Highly skilled in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other tools. Knowledge of statistical software applications, including DoE, is a plus
- Knowledge and experience with AAV a plus
