Background: Functional ultra-sound (fUS) imaging is a powerful new modality that has emerged in the last decade and is capable of providing unprecedented functional images of the brain as sub-micrometer spatial and sub-neural-spiking temporal resolution. Part of CUBE center (Center for Ultrasound and Brain imaging at Erasmus MC, https://ultrasoundbrainimaging.com), we are building novel fUS technology that can track in high detail the workings of the human brain. Pilot studies have yielded world-first functional images of human subjects in the Erasmus Medical Center hospital. The unprecedented quality of fUS, which also has the potential to outperform mature modalities like fMRI, comes at the cost of large data sizes being generated. Currently, by using a 2D fUS acquisition probe, data is being generated at 6 GB/s.

Job description: To tackle this data deluge as well as other technical challenges, three job openings are offered:

  • an expert in GPU (and ideally C/C++) programming to further develop and maintain the beamforming code base of CUBE;
  • an expert in mixed-signal PCB design for further developing the hardware of a novel fUS acquisition setup which will facilitate high ultrasound-channel counts (≥8 channels @ ≥12 bits/channel) at high sampling rates (10-30 MHz);
  • an expert in FPGA and embedded-system development for this fUS acquisition setup.

This R&D activity is jointly conducted by the Delft University of Technology and the Erasmus Medical Center.

Keywords: FPGA acceleration, HPC, image processing, deep learning.
