About the Job

Dr. Ziad Nahas (Interventional Psychiatry Lab) in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is seeking an outstanding candidate for a postdoctoral position to work on a federally-funded, multi-site, collaborative project in the area of neurostimulation research on Vagus Nerve Stimulation.

Candidates should be passionate about advancing knowledge in the area of translational research of depressive disorders and other mental health conditions with a focus on invasive and non-invasive brain stimulation treatments. This position is ideal for a clinician seeking to grow their academic and research career through mentoring and practice. The position is available September 1, 2023, and funding is available for at least two years.

  • Participant Recruitment and Enrollment – 45%
    • Collaborate with other providers across networks to share study details and facilitate informed referrals to research studies.
    • Develop and present information to colleagues via zoom meetings and inclusion/exclusion sheets.
    • Assess referred candidates for initial suitability via chart review and review of pre-screen and phone screen materials.
    • Review medical and mental health factors that may prevent or encourage enrollment.
  • Clinical Research Rating – 45%
    • Responsible for completing structured clinical interviews for research participants to evaluate eligibility and provide ongoing assessment of depressive and other symptoms to ensure participant safety.
    • Under the mentorship of Dr. Nahas, develop research interview techniques and use best practices to collect comprehensive information on symptomatology for research purposes.
    • Utilize current clinical skills to transfer to research work.
  • Career Development – 10%
    • Development of professional and technical skills, including data analysis, presentation and publication support in preparation for academic career in medical research.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • MD or MD-PhD, with experience working directly with patients or research participants
  • Licensed to practice psychiatry in the United States
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software
  • Possess excellent communication skills; verbal and written
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with others in person and virtually
  • Exposure to electronic database/form development (REDCap or equivalent)
  • Exposure to clinical trials, particularly collecting histories or completing assessments

 

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with electronic medical records systems (e.g., Epic or other)
  • Experience with clinical trials, including data collection and analysis
  • Experience performing clinical or research interviews with patients or participants
  • Record of disseminating research information via presentation or publication

 

About the Department

Dr. Ziad Nahas’s Lab is located primarily at the Interventional Psychiatry Program’s St. Louis Park clinic, with additional study activity at UMN and M Health Fairview sites on the UMN campus. Our work focuses on advancing translational research of mood dysregulation and depressive disorders. Specific interests and areas of expertise include:

  • Improving patient care of treatment resistant disorders using neuromodulation techniques.
  • Functional neuroimaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG) and brain stimulation modalities: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), prefrontal cortical stimulation (PCS), deep brain stimulation (DBS), electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and focal electrically administered seizure therapy (FEAST).
  • Increasing equitable access to neuromodulation interventions for patient care.
