Senior Scientist, Molecular Profiling- Department of Cellular and Tissue Genomics

Pharmaceuticals    ·    San Francisco, CA   ·   Full time

The Position

The Department of Cellular and Tissue Genomics within Genentech Research and Early Development is seeking a highly talented, creative and driven Senior Scientist to generate foundational atlases of tissues and blood for biological and drug discovery and to develop novel technologies for enhanced single cell genomics for tissue studies.

This individual will lead an independent research group whose mission is to develop and apply scalable tools for generating atlases of healthy and disease tissues. The scope of these activities will span biological disciplines, including immunology, molecular oncology, cancer immunology and neuroscience medicine. The scientists will play a key role in leading and contributing to teams in disease areas of focus. They will apply these tools to identify novel therapeutic targets and next-generation biomarkers to enable precision medicine therapies for patients.

Responsibilities

  • Profile clinical trial samples (e.g. tissues, blood) to inform screen design and biomarker and drug discovery
  • Pursue scalable tools enabling single cell genomics for tissue studies in biologically relevant tissues (e.g. patient samples, organoids)
  • Develop new modalities and expanding the toolkit (e.g by deploying and developing new methods)
  • Collaborate with disease experts across the therapeutic areas to design experiments tailored to biological discovery and new biomarkers and therapeutic targets
  • Work together with machine learning teams to develop and apply models to describe molecular circuitry and identify new biomarkers and therapeutic targets
  • Mentor colleagues to enable their scientific potential
  • Publish in high quality scientific journals and present externally though presentations at key internal and external meetings, advisory boards, and conferences

Qualifications

  • Ph.D., M.D. or Ph.D/M.D. with relevant postdoctoral experience in tumor immunology, molecular oncology or neuroscience. Expertise in cellular biology and molecular biology using single cell genomics and spatial methods
  • Strong publication record of impactful discoveries that reveal novel biological pathways and/or advanced technologies to enable biological discovery
  • Experience with performing large scale single cell profiling projects, collecting multimodal single-cell readouts (chromatin, RNA, protein) in various settings including tissues and blood
  • Experience with inventing and deploying new single-cell methods
  • Experience applying diverse CRISPR technologies (CRISPR gene editing, activation, repression) in vivo, ex vivo, and in cell lines is a plus
  • Experience working with computational biologists including high throughput single cell genomics and interpretation of results
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work within a team comprised of diverse expertise
  • Excellent mentoring skills across all levels
  • Excellent oral and written presentation skills
