Aether biomedical is a medical robotics startup from Poland solving the critical problem of the lack of a bidirectional communication between assistive therapy devices and the human body, leading to randomized, inefficient rehabilitation – missing out on invaluable musculoskeletal biomarkers.

Our tech is focused on building the operating system for the rehab industry utilizing musculoskeletal sensors, ML algorithms and smart therapy devices. Intending to deploy the tech across the neuromuscular rehab domain, our initial implementation is in the upper limb amputation space with Zeus, a multi-modal bionic solution, already on the market as a CE certified medical device.

Now, we are turning it up a notch by building the first, truly natural bionic limb of its kind – detecting true neural intent, exerting proportional control and providing sensory feedback. On top of that we are working on building a digital therapy platform that would support amputees throughout their end to end patient journey, providing interactive training, delivering real time feedback and bringing patients closer to rehabilitation professionals.

We have already raised multiple rounds of funding from leading VC’s from US, UK, Germany, Poland and India. Additionally, we have been part of multiple national and European grant programmes, winning esteemed awards such as Robotunion and Polish product of the future among others. Most recently, we have just closed a major round of funding led by a leading VC from New York, allowing us to double our team size to 40 people in the upcoming months. One of the key positions that we are looking for is a VP of software position (with a possible transition to CTO). You would be working with a group of extremely curious and talented individuals, including members of the Forbes 25 under 25 list, ex MD’s of some of the largest prosthetic companies and regulatory leads of Fortune 500 companies.

Job description

As a Vice president of Software engineering, you will lead a group of talented engineers across multiple product lines, who are dedicated to building the next generation of assistive devices and human machine interfaces for rehabilitation. We expect you to be an expert in the field of biomedical signal processing and machine learning (specially neural and muscular signals). You must be a self- starter and possess great leadership and communication skills.

We hold ourselves accountable to the culture of innovation that we created, and we enjoy our work as much as we enjoy working together. We want leaders who can get things done while having a positive influence on our workplace environment.

As a VP Software, you will bear the following responsibilities:

Primarily you will lead the development of Aether’s neural detection engine and build our capabilities in processing high density surface EMG signals to control assistive devices and perform human musculoskeletal monitoring. Alongside that, you would work on the development of our sensory feedback and closed loop mechanisms to establish bi-directional communication with patients.

Additionally, you will

  • Lead multiple software/embedded development and project teams including staffing, mentoring, enhancing, and maintaining best-of-class software development across multiple teams and disciplines.
  • Support the development of web and mobile applications, such as our digital therapy platform for end to end patient journey mapping and remote monitoring.
  • Lead the signal processing, machine learning and control systems team to support the development of our product portfolio.
  • Manage and optimize the overall software development lifecycle with an emphasis on productivity and automation.
  • Drive software development roadmaps, operational plans, and the management of execution against project plans and delivery commitments within an Agile/Scrum environment.
  • Report on development status, quality, operations, and system performance to executive management and act quickly and decisively to resolve customer-impacting issues.
  • Evolve and improve the software development practice within the organization, including better practices, reporting, tools, and evolution of development methodology.

To perform this job successfully, you should demonstrate the following competences:

  • Battle Hardened – Bring strong software development, machine learning and operational management experience to the table that demonstrates what right looks like.
  • Planning and Management – Highly effective planning, organizational and operational skills
  • Leadership and Vision – Ability to inspire people at all levels to follow your technical and operational vision
  • Problem Solving – Strong critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities
  • Ability to withstand chaos – Ability to deal with a positively chaotic and fast-paced environment
  • Ownership – Willingness to take ownership of multiple product lines and display independent decision making

We expect you to have the following qualifications and experience:

  • MS/PhD in Computer science, electronics, biomedical engineering or related field
  • 7+ years of research and commercial development experience – primarily in processing biomedical signals (specially neural signals) – We use Python
  • 3+ years of experience in driving full DevOps software development and engineering practices
  • Hands-on experience implementing production machine learning systems at scale – primarily with real-time, time series data
  • Experience working with Deep Learning Frameworks (e.g.,TensorFlow, Keras)
  • Experience working with digital signal processing applied to the processing of EMG signals
  • Experience building and managing new Engineering teams
  • Immense love towards brain computer interfaces and neuroscience of motor control

Additionally, these experiences are not required, but would be really helpful:

  • Should have deployed at least one commercial solution on the market
  • Familiarity in implementing machine learning algorithms in embedded systems
  • Familiarity in working with hardware devices and IoT ecosystems
  • Experience in working with assistive devices
  • Experience working with medical devices and digital health solutions

We know we are asking for a lot, but we are ready to give back proportionally in return. At Aether, you can expect –

  • Salary range of 4000 – 6000 Euros gross per month
  • Equity in a fast growing company valued between 100,000 to 200,000 USD (Just for reference, the value of equity has grown over 5X in just the past two years)
  • Flexible working hours
  • Private insurance, relocation package, training budget and IT equipments
  • Really cool office space in the center of Poznan (Mostowa)
  • Partly remote work after 6 months of joining
  • A supportive and energetic work environment, with colleagues laser-focused on delivering the vision

Full disclosure:

  • We expect you to move to Poznan, or be available in Poznan for the majority of the week.
